C.E. Williams Middle School for Creative and Scientific Arts (CEW) increases learner readiness in the areas of creativity and critical thinking through a variety of strategies and experiences for our learners. We believe that learners must develop creativity to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. Therefore, we ensure a variety of opportunities exist in the core curriculum, visual and performing arts, STEM, and extracurricular activities. Learners experience the curriculum through strategies, including direct instruction, collaboration, independent, and hands-on learning.
Classroom discussion across the curriculum emphasizes and encourage learners to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through performance and producing artifacts. As a 1:1 device school, we include the use of ALEKS adaptive software for math and iReady adaptive software for reading. We have also implemented Academic Intervention in the Morning (AIM) time to respond rapidly to learners’ need for curricular support. We have focused on increasing math proficiency and as a result, have seen growth in sixth and seventh grade and maintained scores in the eighth grade according to the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment.
Our exploratory classes consist of visual and performing arts, foreign language, and nationally recognized STEM courses. Learners can participate in opportunities that extend beyond the school day in clubs, activities, and competitions.
Critical thinking is embedded throughout the curriculum, as learners have to engage in rigorous tasks and activities in the classroom. Learners must use their critical thinking skills and creativity to meet the challenges they experience daily. The challenge may involve an escape room activity in ELA or math, engaging in debate in social studies, or delivering a speech on a given topic.
Receiving recognition through the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform as a School to Watch, CEW continues to focus on supporting the academic and developmental needs of middle grades learners. We are also committed to preparing them for high school, college, and careers in a global economy. As we like to say, “It’s a great day to be a Mustang because we are second to none!”
