St. John’s High School aims to prepare all students to be productive citizens and develop world-class skills and life and career characteristics as outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We strive to ensure that all students who graduate are prepared to be successful in college or have the skills necessary to enter the workforce and begin their careers.
This year our faculty, staff, and administration had a renewed focus on academic preparation for students in the area of college and career readiness. The St. John’s staff has participated in countless hours of professional development designed specifically to provide them with the instructional strategies needed for improved academic outcomes. We have expanded opportunities for more students to take practice college entrance exams (PreACT and PreSAT), increased the number of opportunities for students to take the military entrance exam, ASVAB (4 testing dates this school year), provided opportunities for students to engage in internships and apprenticeship programs aligned with there career interest, and provided incentives to students who officially met the state’s criteria to be considered college and/or career ready. We also held data review meetings for all teachers who teach classes that have End of Course exams where we reviewed the school’s goals, and current benchmark data, and developed plans to support all students earning C or higher on their respective End of Course Exam.
This year we laid the groundwork to re-establish a Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) which will officially begin in the Fall of 2023. We have also had several parent and community information sessions to engage parents and community members on the positives of St. John’s High School in an attempt to recruit and retain more students.
As we move into the 23-24 school year we aim to provide more opportunities for students to take college-level classes through Advance Placement and Dual Enrolment courses as well as experience real-world careers through paid work experience programs offered through SC Works. We also aim to create a more positive school culture through the implementation of PBIS, increased participation in athletics, and providing more opportunities for clubs and extracurricular activities.
