Wilson High School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a rigorous student centered curriculum, and providing opportunities for students to explore career and educational pathways after graduation. Even with our school year being altered due to the world wide pandemic, it is still the goal of Wilson High School to provide all students a safe and nurturing environment while challenging them to achieve their highest potential.
The creativity and innovation of all our faculty and staff was on full display as our students finished the school year on an eLearning Platform. The teachers at Wilson High School created instructional lessons to accommodate the various learning styles, and adapted the curriculum to be delivered on our eLearning platform. Using technology, teachers were able to still model and demonstrate strategies, while the students were provided the opportunity to present projects and other assignments. Even with students learning from home, our teachers, school counselors, and administrators maintained a consistent line of communication with parents and students.
To better prepare students for the rigors of Honors, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate classes, during the 2020 school year Wilson High became an AVID school. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a research based school wide initiative that provides schools with professional development and other resources that give students the skills to be successful in college, careers, and life. The 2019-20 school year also had other innovative programs being implemented at Wilson High such as a Medical Coding Program which led to a certification students could use to immediately start a career in the medical field.
The International Baccalaureate and Early College Programs allowed students to take a rigorous curriculum while receiving college credit. This past year, 35 students received Associate Arts Degrees or an IB diploma. As a group, the graduating Wilson Class of 2020 earned over 13 million dollars in scholarships, and will attend some of the top colleges and universities throughout the state and nation.
The Class of 2020 had a very arduous end to their high school years. Though the ending was not the way they envisioned, like all of the students of Wilson High, they were resilient and steadfast to complete their journey with pride. As they ventured into a new world, they have the Knowledge, Skills, and Character to be successful from the education they received from Wilson High School.
