Hemingway Elementary School, Home of the Tiny Tigers, serves approximately 290 scholars in child development through fifth grade. The scholars at Hemingway Elementary School (HES) are provided a quality education in a safe learning environment and are encouraged and supported to do their personal best. At HES, believe that we are “Growing into Greatness” each and every day. The faculty and staff at HES embrace innovative approaches and next best practices as a means through which our scholars can become responsible adults who live and work productively in an ever-changing society. In order to accomplish our goals, we focus on instructional programs, teacher preparedness and strong home to school relations. Ultimately, we strive to culminate a positive school climate that promotes a culture of teaching and learning.
Hemingway Elementary School is helping all scholars develop world-class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by providing a high-quality, safe, respectful environment where scholars are eager to participate and learn. We are ensuring that our scholars are college and career ready by infusing researched-based best practices, skills, and strategies that promote collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and leadership.
Our teachers are committed to ongoing professional development in which they immerse themselves in the study of effective strategies and best practices that are, in turn, implemented in their classrooms. Teachers used data to facilitate informed decisions that drove instruction and implemented a more rigorous curriculum across the content areas. A multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) assisted us to provide targeted support for struggling scholars and to decrease behavioral issues. Weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLC), planning, and cluster meetings were provided for our teachers and administrators. They participated in meaningful, ongoing data-driven, collaborative, and researched-based professional development for curriculum and assessment alignment, data analysis, lesson planning, special education, gifted instruction, student engagement, and instructional delivery. Additionally, our scholars participated in school and community-based activities, Jr. Beta Club, Student Council, 21st Century Program, sporting events, and community service projects.
As part of our Positive Behavior Intervention System, we provide continuous modeling of how to exhibit these expectations in every area of the school through praise of scholars who display these actions, and various expectations coaching sessions throughout the year. Scholars who follow and promote the expectations are rewarded with Paw Bucks that can be used at our school store or saved and used to attend quarterly celebrations. Hemingway Elementary School is a place where all faculty and staff believe that all scholars can learn and our staff is committed to providing the type of environment necessary to ensure they can meet that expectation. By doing so, we believe that we are creating a brighter future for South Carolina by developing South Carolina graduates and future leaders.
