Greg Mathis Charter High School continues to cater to the diverse needs of all students by providing an academically challenging, developmentally appropriate, and safe environment which offers excellent growth opportunities for a diverse student population. Our goals are to provide the necessary classroom conditions that enable students to develop content mastery and inquiry, while becoming competent, self- sufficient, self- disciplined, and responsible citizens. We consistently promote parent and community involvement as we are cognizant that our stakeholders are our greatest assets. Our school’s academic program is designed to teach our students to become effective problem solvers, communicators and critical thinkers who are able to compete globally. We ensure that our teachers are fully prepared to deliver high quality instruction by engaging them in continuous Professional Development in the areas of “Personalized Learning”, “Blended Learning”, “Authentic Assessments”, “Differentiated Instruction”and “Providing Rigorous Instruction”.
Our academic program prepares our students to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills as well as collaboration and teamwork. As the world’s economy shifts from manufacturing jobs towards the service industry, entrepreneurship and innovation, there is a clear consensus among parents, educators, politicians and business leaders that it is crucial that students graduate into university or the workforce with the ability to identify and solve complex problems, think critically about information, work effectively in teams and communicate clearly about their thinking. Teachers use integrative thinking, ladder of inference and the growth mindset to encourage students to examine multiple viewpoints and critically assess problems to determine viable alternatives. Evidence of the success of this characteristic within our school is evidenced in our MAP scores where our 9th grade students’ Fall – Spring growth in grade level mean RIT score was 3.3% in Mathematics, 1.7% in Reading and 2.1% in Language Usage. Our 10th grade students grew 2.4% in Math and 1.3% in Language Usage, while our 11th grade students grew 1.58% in Mathematics. As a school that serves students with wide proficiency gaps, the fact that there was growth in the CORE subject areas at ever grade level was a huge success for our students and school since it supports the fact that the academic interventions that are implemented school wide are being effective in reducing these proficiency gaps. Adhering to these strategies and exploiting our opportunities for growth will help us to register even more growth in the coming school year.
