The focus of Calhoun County Public Schools continues to center around "Teaching and Learning." Our staff aims to provide our students with world-class educational experiences that will enable them to successfully enter the world of work or higher education upon high school completion. The District's Honors Academy has seen students working towards and, in some instances, obtaining an Associate of Arts Degree from Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College days before graduating from Calhoun County High School. The District is honored to have had three students earn their Associates Degree in May 2023. Notably, we remain an eLearning and Transform SC School District.
We continue to address the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning and social and emotional health. During the summer of 2023, many of our students and families took advantage of the summer enrichment programs that offered students the opportunity to return to the classroom to continue the process of regaining lost skills and recouping course credit.
We continued the year by offering programs that strengthen and enhance the social and emotional well-being of our students. Offerings through the Department of Mental Health and the other service providers who interact with our students were vital. As a District, we continue to examine our strengths and areas of improvement to build upon in the 2023-24 school year to help prepare our students for academic and social success. As we close the 22-23 year to start a new, we must continue our focus on the academic progress of our students while attempting to close the learning gaps that exist. We salute our student-athletes for their tireless and noble representation of the District as they competed in events across the State. We are proud of our student scholars and athletes who earned the opportunity to study and compete at the collegiate level. Their hard work and accomplishments should serve as an example for all students.
During the 2023-24 school year, we will continue our dedication to the literacy initiative for parents and children/students from birth to third grade. Our work continues with First Steps, Head Start, the Calhoun County Library, and the District's Chief Academic Officer, Principals, and staff who make up the District's Literacy Committee. We are appreciative of the support from our countless partnerships throughout the local community and State and will begin the work to establish new relationships that will benefit our stakeholders. The lines of communication will continue to run in both directions to receive and provide information and transparency. Stakeholders are invited to engage staff in conversations to aid students and improve programs. Saturday with the Superintendent will be available to those who want to take advantage of Saturday hours with the Superintendent.
