Charles B. DuBose Jr. Middle School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing all students with opportunities to work on interdisciplinary, real-world projects that involve creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, communication, information, media, and technology. Charles B. DuBose Jr. Middle School embeds World Class Skills into all our content areas. In addition, DuBose Middle School, located in Summerville, SC, continues to exemplify our vision of providing each of our students a “world-class” education through rigorous and relevant learning so that all students can reach their full potential. We pride ourselves on teaching the whole child with instruction that focuses on the three main areas of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate; World Class Knowledge, World Class Skills, and Life and Career Characteristics. Our instruction fosters growth in academics, fine arts, technology, and communication skills.
Charles B. DuBose Jr. Middle School provides our students with rigorous instruction to prepare them for high school using South Carolina State Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. We also offer advancement through the GATE program or remediation through several intervention courses. Special education students receive services through resource or self-contained settings where students work on their educational level and on life skills. Through Professional Learning Communities, teachers collaborate for improved teaching and learning, review and disaggregate student data, work collaboratively to develop project-based learning for College and Career Readiness, and design lessons that challenge students. During our redesigned Wildcat Advisory Dens, our students are exposed to lessons that incorporate the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
Another way in which our students at DuBose Middle School learn the World Class Skills of creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, communication, information, media, and technology is through our array of award-winning fine arts programs, health and wellness programs, and athletic teams. The DMS Band and Steel Band programs are regularly adjudicated at the highest levels and continue to win national awards. The DMS Chorus, Piano, and Orchestra programs regularly bring home Superior ratings at local and state competitions. Additionally, DMS students have the opportunity to improve their health and wellness through a variety of middle school athletic programs and after-school clubs. Our Wildcat athletic teams continue to have successful seasons on the field and in the classroom. Our DMS Health and Wellness Committee continues to develop and implement initiatives that improve the physical, mental, and emotional health of faculty, staff, and students. The DMS Running Club participated in a variety of local runs with participants from each grade level and our faculty and staff.
At Charles B. DuBose Jr. Middle School, students are not only taught critical thinking and problem-solving skills inside the classroom but also through a variety of after-school clubs. Students can choose from Dimension U, Lego Robotics, Trebuchet team, Math is Cool, STEM club, Chess Club, Encore Drama club, and Gardening club. Our students and staff maintain a Katie’s Krops school garden with the bounties going to needy families in our area, including two annual free Community Dinners hosted in the DMS Cafeteria.
Lastly, community and parent involvement are very important to us at Charles B. DuBose Jr. Middle School. We want all parents/guardians involved in their child’s education. Our parents are involved by volunteering at our school through chaperoning activities, assisting in our many PTSA events, as well as other school programs. There is nothing more important than a child’s education, so we invite everyone to play an active role in every aspect of it.
