Aiken Intermediate School is helping all students develop World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by forging strong positive relationships with students so they build confidence, gain academic knowledge and achieve independence. Our school prepares a community of learners with academic skills, habits of mind, and leadership abilities necessary to succeed in a global society.
Aiken Intermediate School (AIS) offers an all sixth-grade experience. The academic and arts programs at AIS are designed to meet the unique needs of 11- and 12 –year old students. The staff is committed to helping students transition from elementary school to middle school by providing academic instruction in small learning communities or learning camps. In addition, the single-grade school concept focuses on building confidence in students through a Social and Emotional Learning emphasis. Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides the structure and process for adults and students to develop fundamental emotional, social competencies and experiences to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Aiken Intermediate School’s SEL builds and deepens a positive, nurturing school, which in turn leads to long-term success for students. Aiken Intermediate is a Capturing Kids’ Hearts school.
Students experienced rigorous academic course work through advanced and grade level offerings in ELA, mathematics, science and social studies. Students represented AIS well and placed in district and regional competitions such as Battle of the Books, Academic Team and the district spelling bee. Givon Rasmusson was our school spelling bee winner and our Battle of the Books team earned 3rd place in the district competition. A rich arts program afforded students learning and performance opportunities in dance, visual arts, orchestra, chorus, and band.
Aiken Intermediate School is committed to excellence and is fortunate to have a faculty and staff of dedicated professionals. Experienced and passionate educator, Amanda Landaverde was our Teacher of the Year and Dana Ergle was our First Year Teacher of the Year. Angela Mitchum was our Giving Even More Recipient. We are committed to the promise to deliver a world class education that will prepare our students for whatever challenges await. We appreciate the community and parent support and look forward to another year of building relationships with families and supporting students.
