Richland Northeast High School, a National Certified Demonstration Magnet School, has been part of the Northeast Columbia community for more than four decades. Each year, our commitment grows deeper to providing a high-quality education for students that nurtures the development of global thinkers and problem solvers. Richland Northeast High School is helping all students to develop the world class skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by delivering opportunities for every child, every day, giving them every chance to succeed. Our graduates leave Richland Northeast knowing how to learn using critical thinking and problem solving; collaboration and teamwork; and communication, information, media, and technology skills.
Creativity and innovation
Richland Northeast seeks to bring out the best in each student by offering lessons and learning experiences that expand their minds and broaden their creativity and innovation. One example is through our AVID Program or AVID Elective Course. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a system for all students to lead and excel academically while experiencing the rigors of high level courses. Students can also explore their creativity and innovation through our Career and Technical Education offerings, including Culinary Arts, Business Management, Sports Management, Cosmetology, Computer Programming, Entrepreneurship and more.
We are an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. IB offers a higher level of learning that equips students with better writing and critical thinking skills to be successful worldwide. Magnet Schools of America named Richland Northeast a National Magnet School of Distinction for our IB Programme. The IB Middle Years, Diploma and Career-related Programs curriculum serves as the cornerstone of Richland Northeast’s demanding academic program. We are also home to Horizon, an academic magnet for highly motivated, academically talented students; The Palmetto Center for the Arts, which offers dance, music, theater and visual arts; and Convergence Media, a nationally award-winning, journalism program.
Collaboration and teamwork
A great example of collaboration and teamwork in action at Richland Northeast can be in the collective efforts of the Student Council. The National Student Council named Richland Northeast a 2022 National Gold Council of Excellence and the South Carolina Association of Student Councils named Richland Northeast a Gold Honor Council, which is a testament to the highest standards of quality that our council consistently demonstrates in its operation, projects, and activities.
In addition to the Student Council, Richland Northeast has a number of clubs and organizations where students collaborate to advocate for their community and passions. Richland Northeast has an award winning Mock Trial program where they learn to advocate via the justice system. They also have a prestigious Model U.N program with over 38 years of award winning teams who have presented to various delegations.
Communication, information, media and technology
Richland Northeast is known across the country for its award-winning Convergence Media program. Students in this program often team up with school and district administrators to research, create, and disseminate news and information. Students are experiencing great success and have won multiple awards recently, including an Emmy in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Student Production Awards and the Southeast Student Production award.
Convergence Media Magnet students won over 40 awards at the Southern Interscholastic Press Association convention held at the University of South Carolina. RNE-TV Live, a student-led broadcast, won the Scroggins Award which recognizes the Best in South Broadcast.
We are not shy about telling our own story and our own good news. The RNE “Good News” initiative provides regular press releases about student and school achievements to all local news outlets. This information is also distributed directly to parents, students, community members and staff via our online “CavCast” blog that won a Reward for Excellence from the South Carolina chapter of the National School Public Relations Association.
Knowing how to learn
Educating students in a well-rounded manner that builds upon their natural strengths and aptitudes is a part of our rich culture and tradition of excellence. The ability of students to succeed beyond our campus is a daily priority. Thus, the administration, teachers and staff work each day to be sure academic programs remain among the most relevant, challenging, and enriching for our students. This is accomplished with the support of students, families, teachers, staff and a devoted School Improvement Council. Together we ensure our students leave 7500 Brookfield Road prepared to embark upon their pathway to success.
