Mary H. Wright is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing challenging learning experiences in a safe and caring environment. Student growth in literacy is supported through a balanced literacy approach which includes whole group, small group, and individual instruction. The MHW staff is committed to providing student-centered instruction, following our state standards, in an environment that prepares students to become active, compassionate, lifelong learners, and responsible world-class citizens. We also provide proactive intervention for all grade levels to make sure student deficits are targeted. In addition to intervention, our school has fully implemented Reading Recovery to serve first-grade students. By collaborating with the Reading Coach and the Continuous Improvement Coach, teachers are provided direct guidance to make instructional decisions to ensure we meet the needs of each student Our current vision for MHW is that we would be recognized widely for exceptional student achievement, which will help make our community a better place to work and live.
Our community partnerships at Mary H. Wright are an integral part of our school. Episcopal Church of the Advent partners with us to subsidize field trips, tutor students, plan special events, and support classroom teachers. We sponsor a school carnival that attracts many community members and families, and we continue to enhance our school plays with the help of the Episcopal Church of the Advent. St. John’s Lutheran Church and Majority Baptist Church are very close in proximity to our school and help pack food bags for students on weekends. Mt. Moriah Baptist Church sponsors our First Tee program at MHW, and volunteers come weekly to conduct Good News Club with groups of students after school. We are also very fortunate to have a dynamic partnership with the Kids Clubs of the Upstate. In 2023-2024, 151 students attended our Club, with several former students coming from our feeder middle school next door to assist students in different activities. We will continue to help all students by offering various academic opportunities with a blend of community outreach projects. We thank our school community for their support as we support and challenge our students to reach their full potential.
Students use technology to create and publish research, produce performances that integrate arts and other content, and build fluency and knowledge in all subjects. We were fortunate to have 1:1 MacBooks for all students in grades 2-5 and kindergarten and first-grade students utilize 1:1 iPads. We have a Technology Integration Specialist who helps teachers and students integrate technology into instruction and assessment.
Spartanburg Academic Movement is also helping MHW in many ways. They provide ongoing training for our Continuous Improvement Coach, who works with grade levels in planning instruction, analyzing data, and training in Balanced Literacy methods to assist our students. This person, along with our Reading Coach, assists K-5th-grade teachers in grade-level teams for two hours each week.
Students experience art in a variety of forms, allowing them to build connections to the core curriculum through innovation, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. They showcase their learning through performances and project displays. Students display their visual art in the school and the district. They perform in our chorus and during our annual spring musical production.
