During the 2022-2023 school year, McCormick Elementary School guided students to discover new and innovative ways to learn and grow in their development to being globally competitive through enhanced creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Our instructional focus centered on implementing the iReady program for Reading and Math along with the Fountas & Pinnell Classroom for literacy with an emphasis on Text Dependent Analysis (TDA) writing using the RACES strategy. We utilized the IntoMath curriculum and expanded our technological skills with a LEGO robotics team that competed in state competitions (Mechanical Mustangs). We partnered with DUKE Energy to host a STEM Night where students, parents, and community members came together to participate in fun STEM activities. We developed a 3D Printing with the Principal program where students were introduced to Tinker Cad and 3d Modeling.
We extended the STEP (Supporting Teacher Effectiveness Project) process from previous years by meeting twice weekly by subject area and once weekly by grade level to collaborate by reviewing data to design, implement, and adjust instruction as needed based on student achievement.
Our ILT (Instructional Leadership Team) grew more proficient in identifying our specific instructional problem based on data and staff feedback. In the weekly meetings, we developed shared responsibility by taking ownership of areas of concern and utilizing resources to improve student performance. We are excited about adjustments made leading into the 23-24 school year.
Our SIC (School Improvement Council) chose to focus on improving the STEM knowledge of all students for the 22-23 school year. The SIC supported partnerships with community businesses to host a STEM Night where staff, students, and stakeholders participated in STEM activities. This helped strengthen our partnership with parents, while supporting academics. We also continued our partnership with SCDHEC (South Carolina Department of Health/Environmental Control) and Clemson University to provide nutritional and science information for our students. This information encouraged good decision making, healthy eating habits, and sustainability through growing crops.
The PBIS team used discipline data to provide events that celebrate good decision-making skills. Weekly celebrations were held for students who exhibited these positive behaviors. These efforts are centered around STANG (be Safe, Take responsibility, Act positively, Nurture relationships, and Give respect).
At McCormick Elementary School, we are Motivated, Educated, & Spirited! Go Mustangs!
