South Conway Elementary School is continuing to help all students develop the world class skills of the profile of a South Carolina graduate by providing a caring, safe and academically challenging learning environment. We provide a welcoming environment through the implementation of our school's vision: a school that develops the emotional, social and intellectual development of each child and provides service learning opportunities to solve real world problems through becoming active, responsible citizens. South Conway Elementary has had an excellent 2023-2024 school year. Each grade level participated in Service Learning projects which identified and addressed needs in the community. These projects included working with senior citizens, emergency preparedness, animal shelters, Churches Assisting People, First Responders, Veterans, Freedom Readers, local blood banks and food banks in our community. Students and teachers participated in projects such as The American Heart Association and The United Way.
Reading, math, life skills, and citizenship incentives were used throughout the year to encourage students to do their personal best in all academic and character areas. Students were given leadership opportunities through recognitions such as Good School Citizens and Life Skills Leaders. Strategic and intensive interventions based on specific data points were provided in reading and math in grades K-5. Tutoring was offered for all students in grades K-5 in the area of reading and math.
Our Kindergarten students began the year with a baseline of 32% meeting benchmark and above on DIBELS. By the end of the year these students were at 83% benchmark and above. All students grew academically throughout the year as indicated on DIBELS and MAP assessments. Digital content programs were implemented such as Lexia, Achieve 3000, Aleks math, MAP Accelerator and Dreambox. Students in grades 3-5 grew an average of 202 Lexile points during the course of the year. Our Special Education team has embraced co-teaching in order to provide standards-based instruction for our special education students. 62% of our disabled subgroup met their growth goal in reading and 68% met their growth goal in math as measured by NWEA MAP assessments.
Our PTO sponsored successful online fundraising activities to encourage parent involvement and provide extra funding for school projects such as 5th grade honors day, teacher recognition and Art in the Yard. Our Title 1 budget supported 4 part-time reading and math interventionists, a family school coordinator, 1 instructional coach, 2 Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Service Counselors, a 0.5 Special Education teacher, after school tutoring and monthly parent workshops. Many local business partners provided incentives for our students and staff. In addition, several faith-based organizations partnered with our school throughout the year. Our school provided an after school child care program for families that needed this service. We continue to partner with Coastal Carolina University to provide opportunities for future teachers to do practicum and internships as well as mentor students. Our goal is to help all students reach their aspirations and give them voice in their learning. We have maintained a report card rating of Good for the past 11 years. We are fortunate to have great community support for our school. South Conway Elementary School is proud of the successes, programs, and progress our students are making. We are a school that embraces the concept that teaching and learning are top priorities.
