Waccamaw Elementary is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by provide meaningful and engaging educational experiences. The instructional goals at WES are data-driven, and our teachers are dedicated to providing engaging and high-quality instruction that is rigorous, innovative, and student-centered. We have worked hard to sustain effective professional learning team meetings that give our teachers the opportunity to analyze data, common plan, and develop common assessments. The administrators and instructional coach at WES strive to provide teachers with meaningful professional development opportunities in order to enhance instruction.
The implementation of predictable structures and routines during our ELA blocks instill independence, effective collaboration, and problem solving skills, and allow our students to take ownership of their learning. Waccamaw Elementary provides specialized instruction to meet the needs of all students through various interventions, opportunities, and programs. Our teachers actively participate in weekly PLCs that are centered around MTSS. Our teachers are committed to providing high-quality Tier I instruction to all students. Students who are in need of Tier II and Tier III intervention receive researched-based small group instruction from a classroom teacher, a special education teacher, or our school's interventionist. All students at WES continue to take part in our district’s Chromebook one-to-one initiative which provides them with technology integration that enhances their learning experiences. Therefore, all students have access to technology and are exposed to web 2.0 tools on a regular basis.
Our PTO is incredibly supportive, and our overall parent involvement continues to be instrumental in our school’s success and growth. Thanks to the efforts of many of our stakeholders, WES now has a newly renovated garden space that consists of an outside classroom area, sensory boards, an outdoor eating area, and a buddy bench which has made a positive impact on our school culture and climate. Our teachers, parents, and school community members also provide our students with meaningful learning opportunities, instructional materials, and classroom supplies through grant writing, donations, and volunteering. Waccamaw Elementary strives to maintain clear, constant, and positive communication with parents through weekly newsletters, PTO updates on social media, REMIND text messages, and other communication tools used by individual classroom teachers.
In an effort to develop well-rounded students, WES offers several extra-curricular activities, after-school clubs, and related arts opportunities. Character education is integrated into our school days through guidance lessons, mini-lessons in the regular education classrooms, and a school-wide theme for the year. As a school, we raised a significant amount of money for several charities such as March of Dimes and the American Red Cross's Kids' Heart Challenge. The Waccamaw Elementary School Family is professional, caring, and invested in our school community and what is best for our students.
