Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School – 2021/22
Overcoming the unique challenges and learning obstacles associated with The COVID-19 Pandemic, Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School triumphantly returned to 100% Face-To-Face Instruction for all students in 2021! The administrative faculty, teachers, and staff all endeavor to assist students in the development of world-class, life skills and career characteristics of The Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Students continue to benefit from the impactful level of implementation into character development and leadership skills. Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School allocated more time for instruction and organizational skills by incorporating a homeroom period. This time, within the school day, provided an academic environment for success by introducing students to self-monitoring, organizational skills, progress monitoring, and individual academic growth through the multi-tiered systems of support, or MTSS. The evidence of increased instructional time, targeted academic accountability, and a full time reading interventionist clearly refined the total opportunities for growth. Additionally, the incorporation of research-based, tiered interventions such as Fountas & Pinnell’s LLI, ALEKS, and AIMSWeb all compliment classroom instruction and a high level of academic growth. Teachers continuously strive to stay abreast of current trends and best practices through attending various professional development trainings, onsite workshops, and PLC’s. By utilizing the current trends, engaging in best practices, and having high expectations, students are challenged to reach their full academic potential.
Continuously refining teaching and learning, Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School constantly seeks ways to improve, holistically, by closing the learning gaps and addressing learning losses for all students. Aligning with this objective, Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School continues to utilize The Canvas technological exchange for virtual learning. This virtual format engages and connects students to rigorous computer based programs and scaffolds while providing ongoing learning. Through the use of these instructional programs and strategies, with enhanced data from NWEA’s MAP Assessment and Mastery Connect’s TE 21, many students demonstrated individual growth by showing growth.
Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School also offers various programs, outside of the classroom environment, to help students evolve into well-rounded individuals. The “Student of The Month” Club, Readers Club, The Jr. Beta Club, The Ladies Club, and The Gentlemen’s Club all provide qualified students the opportunities to participate in various service projects, to act as student ambassadors, and to serve as mentors. Students at Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School also participate in Academic Scavenger Hunts, the annual family literacy event – “Spring Fling!” beginner band, and strings classes. Our students also excel through poetry and art contests, receive regional career awards, and exceed requirements in developing new apps through Project Lead The Way.
Engaging every student at Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School is imperative to the development of the whole child. All students enjoy the athletic opportunities of organized sports. By offering coed sports and intramural tourney, all students take advantage of the invitation to experience the physical activity and comradery associated with competition.
Hemingway M.B. Lee Middle School prides itself in the responsibility of involving all stakeholders and community members as active partners in the role of education for our young people. Thanks to the continued support from business partners such as Boeing of S.C., The Low Country Food Bank, Anderson Brothers Bank, Tiger Mart #7, and Food Lion #389, efforts are ongoing to help mold our students as they transition to high school, graduation, productive citizenry, and future leaders of the community, state, and nation.
