L.E. Gable Middle School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by developing leaders and critical thinkers. At Gable, we provide students the opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom through engaging instructional strategies. It is our goal to provide classroom experiences in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies that incorporate opportunities for movement, effective media literacy strategies and student to student collaboration. Through a school wide focus on student engagement, we have seen growth in our students' ownership in the learning process. This past year we focused on student engagement as our school wide professional development focus. As a result we saw a 14% percentage point gain as a school in our SC READY ELA test scores.
At Gable, our students are taught the importance of college and career readiness. Our career development facilitator provides students with access to career development assessment programs as well as targeted career planning instruction. All students participate in the S.C. Occupational Information System to provide up-to-date educational and career information to students and parents.
Our teachers work hard to ensure student needs are met and provide additional enrichment opportunities to support student achievement in academics, the arts and athletics. We offer a wide variety of academic coursework in order to meet the needs of our students. We also have a full time reading intervention teacher and instructional coach to facilitate additional academic intervention opportunities.
With a rich tradition of excellence in academics, arts, and athletics, our goal every year is to make an IMPACT and allow students to achieve success. We have established a Leadership class which develops, leads, and carries out multiple service projects in our school. This group involves the entire student body in projects while developing necessary leadership skills needed to be successful in life. This past year, GMS students hosted a Veteran’s Day ceremony for our community and had a district alumnus who served in the armed forces come speak to our student body. We also participated in a school wide dodgeball tournament to benefit the American Heart Association, with students raising approximately $1,200 to donate to the association.
