Cane Bay Middle School is helping all students develop the characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a comprehensive, rigorous academic program that integrates a full complement of opportunities to promote the development of well-rounded students.
Our teachers collaborate effectively amongst themselves and our instructional coach in their Professional Learning Communities to provide students with the most effective instruction that they can have, as well as using that time to reflect on their current learning practices and gather additional resources and techniquest that they can use to improve the learning environment in their classrooms. Students continue to have access to their materials at any time through the use of Schoology, our new learning platform and also have access to daily tutoring through their team time period. Each day is slated for a different subject that students can get tutoring in, though our teachers continue to go above and beyond by offering additional days. Students have also taken advantage of our retake system for major assessments, TGIF, by meeting the requirements for make-up testing and returning signed permission slips.
One major obstacle that has affected a majority of our students during the first half of the school year has been missing a portion of school due to the quarantine/close contact procedure. During this time, our students were extremely diligent in joining and participating in virtual classroom meetings and keeping up with their assignments through our designated “CQI” folders in Schoology.
This year, we have been able to resume some of our after school activities, clubs and fine arts performances. Our Junior Beta Club and Student Council have both been fully re-established this year and have held continual meetings and have had an induction ceremony. We’ve also celebrated the return of our Renaissance club and event days to celebrate our students’ successes throughout the year. We were not able to conduct any service field trips this year, but are hoping to bring those back in the 2022-2023 school year.
We continue to provide lessons in character education and standards that are part of the BCSD character words. Our Student of the Month recognition emphasizes the importance of good character through the entire year and continuous conversations with students about how to make good choices for themselves are always happening at every part of the school level. While it has been a major adjustment to have all of our students back in the building this year, we continue to work toward “returning to normal”, so that our students will be able to benefit from some of the opportunities that they’ve missed out on in the past two years
It must also be stated that we could not have been as successful as we were this year without the support of our entire community of Cane Bay. Families and students have been incredibly supportive throughout the challenges that we have faced this school year and have worked with us consistently to create the best possible school year and experience for all of our students.
