Newberry High continued to help all students develop world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. This was done by raising rigor, establishing improved connections with our community, and developing positive teacher/student relationships that foster effective communication, team-building, and critical thinking. Our motto at Newberry High School is "Setting the Standards for Excellence" and during the 2021-2022 school year our teachers and students continued to work aggressively to ensure that we lived up to that motto. Coming back to a true in-person, "brick and mortar" school year, our theme for the year Plug N, with the block N representing our Newberry High family. Our mission became a school-wide effort to be sure every student was Plugged N to a positive activity, club, sport, fine arts group, etc. at Newberry High School. Our purpose was to provide all of our students with an additional reason to be excited about coming back to school post-pandemic. As a staff, we also continued to focus on teaching to the depth of the standards in all classes. Teachers collaborated seeking growth in subject specific skills and on standardized tests such as SAT, ACT, WorkKeys and the EOCEP. Additionally, we focused on improving the graduation rate, attendance rate, and retention rates at each grade level. A Graduation Rate team met periodically and worked together to track student attendance and profess, met with truant students and families and worked to ensure that fewer students were listed as withdrawal or drop out.
All teachers are trained in the utilization of best practices to increase the academic success of each student. Areas of focus included literacy, use of power teaching strategies and data driven decision making. Teachers continued to use common assessments and worked to see measurable growth of their students. We continued to provide professional development on technology for all teachers that included new educational websites, applications and engagement strategies.
The Newberry High Beta Club attended the state competition again this year and brought home 14 awards in various categories. Via expanded STEM offerings, we were pleased to compete in the Tech Challenge Robotics competition. The NHS Robodogs won a community relations award for connecting with local manufacturing businesses in the area. NHS also held the annual college and military signing day in which many students and their families participated. The 2022 graduating class earned over a million dollars in scholarships, with 70+ students receiving LIFE scholarships.
The entire year was spent honing our skills to help students define their goals, develop plans for achieving their goals and improving each student's self-direction. At NHS we believe that it is important for students to understand the impact he/she can have on their personal success. We are proud of the efforts of our students, faculty/staff and NHS families. We will continue to work together to pursue excellence and to ensure that our students leave us prepared to be productive citizens.
