Carvers Bay High School
Developing World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate 2021-2022
Overview:
Carvers Bay High School meets and is actively involved in program implementation and delivery of student-centered programs, policy, and procedures to ensure that our students are engaged and progressing toward the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. After finally being able to move forward to some since of normalcy from a Global Pandemic our objectives and focus on enhancing education and training to support sustainment of World Class Knowledge and World Class Skills to include Life and Career Characteristics is continual and fluid. As we relaxed some of the many mitigating procedures associated with COVID-19, implementing policies, programs and procedures to help our students recover and adjust to a new normal school year was prioritized. Infusing remediation programs and social\emotional health initiatives was prioritized to assist students with overcoming the many challenges they faced due to the pandemic and closing the gaps created by not being in school face to face in a normal learning environment. In an effort to meet the mission and vision objectives established, while solidifying the individual self as a Global Competitor, were our primary objectives. Carvers Bay High School remains accredited nationally through AdvancEd as the staff continues to enhance the School Renewal Plan, (SIC) School Improvement Council, Title I and Reading Plans.
World Class Knowledge:
The initiative to incorporate World Class Knowledge is a systemic process enhanced and reinforced as a procedural requirement through Staff Professional Development in a collective design to include critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Collaboration with the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and Literacy Designed Collaborative (LDC) while utilizing the Principles of Best Mathematics Practices has ensured that our Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, College Prep and Dual Enrollment students are instructed at the highest level of rigor. Those programs were ramped up using i-Ready assessments, Mastery Connect and Performance Matters to gauge the current learning levels of incoming 9th graders as a baseline to plan for intentional skill building activities to bring students to or above the current grade level. Although the district offered many opportunities for remediation the success rate was not as impactful as hoped. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills that not only meets the profile of the South Carolina Graduate but ultimately prepares our students to meet and understand the school’s vision of embracing and preparing for College and Career Readiness, as well as Global Competitiveness opportunities continued to be offered however those opportunities were minimal due to COVID-19. In addition, Science, Technology, Engineering (PLTW), Mathematics (STEM), as well as Arts and Social Sciences continue to be at the foundation of our school’s curriculum.
World Class Skills:
District and School wide initiatives, program, policies and procedures support and enhance World Class Skills. As academics are our primary focus, student centered organizations are our primary source of building teamwork and enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our school staff plan and direct student-centered programs designed to develop and promote leadership skills while displaying academic excellence and enhancing life and soft skills. Extra-Curricular Activities to include special programs, service and community projects are essential in developing life and soft skills, while providing insight of community focus and community needs. Our athletic programs which typically dominate the schools’ headlines continued to strive during our adverse and unprecedented times. A tradition of excellence is always emphasized, as well as, the development of leadership and team building skills essential to daily life practices which were evident through the displaying of a work ethic, commitment, and championship pedigree that is Carvers Bay High School. We have developed the understanding, “academic achievements will get you to the point of reaching success, while character development will help you sustain that success.” Our Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MJROTC) program stands as one of our most honored programs. All incoming 9th graders are enrolled in the program as a foundation to high school orientation, which incorporates the total Carvers Bay High School experience. With the mission to enhance citizenship, character, discipline, and self-motivation, these core values are directly related to our school’s vision statement. Our Manners, Respect, and Integrity (MRI) character theme is modeled and consistently blended into daily activities. Students at each grade level receive a monthly MRI award. The MRI senior student character award is also presented to the senior that displays the highest level of character. Our stated vision of developing global competitors is supported by work ethics, character development, academic competence, consequences, and social integrity. Our clubs and organizations model these concepts as a design to reach global competitiveness.
