North Charleston High School (NCHS) is helping all students develop Life and Career Characteristics and World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing personalized and differentiated instruction which focuses on the 3R’s – relationships, rigor, and relevance - as a premise to develop students into productive citizens. North Charleston High School also implements a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support Program (PBIS) and a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS); partners with Charleston County Council and other business entities to provide jobs for students and graduates; partners with Trident Technical College to enroll students in dual credit courses; partners with the school district and community stakeholders to have a full-time STEM support team on school site; and partners with Combined Intervention – a local community organization designed to reduce suspensions and expulsions, teaching students about careers, colleges and universities, and military recruitment.
North Charleston High School has been awarded the status of “School of Innovation” (SOI) whereby it is the only high school within the State of South Carolina that has a teacher certification waiver which allows professionals from the fields of the arts as well as academia to assist students in their academic endeavors. In addition, a seat time waiver has been awarded which allows students to work at their own pace to receive course credit whereby students can graduate within three years. All state administered End of Course (EOC) Exams results increased during the 2021-2022 school year; students have significantly increased the number of A’s, B’s, and C’s earned; there was a significant increase in the number of students who procured course credits through credit recovery from 80 credits during the 2020-2021 school year to 189 credits during the 2021-2022 school year; English Language Learners (ELL) students earned 527 credits during the 2020-2021 school year to 839 credits during the 2021-2022 school year; and ELL students increased the number of A’s and B’s from 279 during the 2020-2021 school year to 522 during the 2021-2022 school year. The school’s scholarships increased from $700,000.00 for the 2019-2020 school year to $1,700,600.00 for the 2020-2021 school to $3,231,000.00 for the 2021-2022 school year.
In the area of Life and Career Skills, NCHS currently offers students numerous career and technical courses, fine arts, and other electives which provide real-world experiences to translate into future college and career opportunities. The school incorporated a social and emotional learning component/curriculum to improve competencies and skills needed to navigate complex work and life environments.
North Charleston High School insists upon and fosters student responsibility and self-awareness in order to grow leaders as this will ensure our students’ future college and career success. The school will continue to find ways to support and grow its students academically, include parents, and seek community resources and opportunities for work-based learning, apprenticeships, and important learning collaborations.
