Eagle Nest Elementary is helping all students to develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a nurturing environment that encourages relationships, rigor, and relevance for our diverse learning community to learn, grow, and succeed.
World class knowledge for every child is a priority at every level at Eagle Nest Elementary. Rigorous curriculum standards are explicitly taught using a literacy and math model that ensures quality, differentiated instruction and success for all. Universal screeners, formative assessments, data analysis that is used to inform instruction, and a systemic Response to Intervention process allow us to determine and meet the needs of our extremely diverse population. Leveled Literacy Instruction, Waterford, Imagine Learning, and targeted math intervention are examples of our efforts to meet the needs of learners in grades K-2. System 44, READ 180, Imagine Learning, and upper-level math intervention are examples of programs used in grades 3-5. Thinking Maps, ESL instruction, Engaging Creative Minds, and Gifted and Talented Education are opportunities offered schoolwide for remediation and enrichment.
Parents are also encouraged to get involved at Eagle Nest. Our campus is home to a parenting center staffed by a full-time teacher. Typically, children are involved in story time while parents who do not speak English can take advantage of the Rosetta Stone program. Even though access to the building has been limited due to COVID restrictions, the learning has continued. Children were provided with take-home packets that could be picked up from the school, and we issued iPads and hotspots to parents who do not speak English so they can take advantage of the Rosetta Stone program. We also collaborate with the Lowcountry Food Bank to sponsor a Fresh For All event where produce was distributed to our communities. Title offerings included a literacy and multi-cultural virtual night, several Bingo nights that focused on comprehension strategies, a math/science virtual event, and Bridging to Next Grade Level events to try to keep students and parents connected to the school family.
World class skills are a focus at Eagle Nest. Teachers challenge students to work together to hone their critical thinking skills. Our award-winning Eagle Bots team, Garden Club, First in Math team, Men of Distinction (MOD squad), Ladies of Exceptional Abilities and Determination (LEAD) and Junior Beta Club typically work together to complete service-learning projects. Although these experiences were limited, students worked together to compile supplies for Backpack buddies and assisted with food distribution during our community events.
Life and Career Characteristics are taught through character education and the Capturing Kids’ Hearts initiative. Students play an active role in establishing and maintaining a positive school culture where everyone feels valued and appreciated. Morning Meetings, Good Things, affirmation stations, universal symbols, and social contracts have become who we are rather than what we do. Our efforts to maintain a positive culture include Character Word of the Month, Patriot Partners, expectation assemblies, Dads and Moms on Duty, small group counseling, honor roll breakfasts, Rock Star Reader celebrations, Terrific Kid, positive referrals, and shout outs. The combined efforts of the community, parents, students, faculty, and staff ensure that we are Capturing Hearts and Simply the Best at The Nest every day at Eagle Nest Elementary School.
