Oakbrook Elementary School works to develop scholars with the skills to be world class by enhancing and developing life and career characteristics highlighted in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
The scholarly journey begins in 4K and extends through fifth grade at Oakbrook Elementary School. Rigorous standards are implemented in the core areas of English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. The fine arts areas are also crucial, allowing our students the opportunity to engage in music, art, physical education, and STEAM. This provides all students with experiences that are an integral part in providing a well-rounded education. Best teaching practices, along with the district Literacy and Math models help to ensure students are able to do their personal best in meeting the standards required. Through the district technology initiative, OES continues to be a 1:1 school enhancing student proficiency in technology utilizing programs such as Waterford, Imagine Learning, Microsoft Teams and One Note, to name a few. This ensures students have opportunities for an individualized learning path. Universal screeners, benchmarks and computer-assisted programs help teachers assess present levels and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of each individual learner.
Our kindergarten through second grade teachers continue to provide intensive reading intervention through the University of Florida Literacy Initiative, Tutoring for Beginning Readers. Several teachers provided after school tutoring to assist students in areas of need, providing additional time and support for students to gain a deeper understanding of the curriculum. Critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and teamwork provide a variety of experiences for our students. Creativity and innovation are focuses within our school through our fine arts program as well as our STEAM initiatives. OES received a grant that will allow for an additional greenhouse to be constructed this summer. OES was the 3rd place recipient of the MUSC/Boeing Health and Wellness initiative. Students will continue to engage with nature by observing various wildlife, recording data, and exploring the world around them as well as adding plants to the garden, harvesting the vegetables and wildflowers, and learning about the life cycles of plants and animals.
OES has been recognized as a National Capturing Kids Hearts Showcase School for the fourth consecutive year. Building relationships among the students, staff, and families is a high priority. Classrooms focus on the positive by building social contracts, setting up affirmation stations, starting the day by sharing “Good Things,” and planning team-building experiences throughout the year. With the mindset of “If you have a child’s heart, you have a child’s mind,” we continue to build and maintain high-performing teams in each classroom and with our families. Family events consisted of grade-level performances, book bingo, fall festival, and award celebrations.
Oakbrook Elementary School strives to provide every student with the skills necessary to be college and career ready with relationships, rigor, and relevance. Our students are engaged in learning that provides them with opportunities to be lifelong learners: academically, socially, and emotionally.
