At Mount Pleasant Academy (MPA), faculty and staff engage students in a variety of learning experiences aimed at fostering learning and innovation skills, enhancing information and technology skills, and supporting students in the acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary for future success.
Students at MPA engage with peers and our community in meaningful ways while focusing on improving literacy skills. This year, we made concerted efforts to act responsibly with the interest of our diverse community in mind. Students learned about the impact they make on the lives of others with a single donation. Donations collected by each grade level went directly to supporting families in need of the most necessities. While supporting the needs of our community, our students gained valuable educational experiences beyond the classroom.
In a year when educators embarked on the path to school in the more traditional sense, we focused on creating authentic opportunities for students to engage in healthy and meaningful conversations with peers. We brought back opportunities for students to read with peers who represent different cultural backgrounds and intellectual needs and abilities. For the first time in over 2 years, students participated in peer book buddies with students in our Low Incidence Special Education classrooms. This opportunity allowed students to work with peers who are different from them. The student leaders chose materials to share with their book buddies, read with them and built relationships that will last beyond their elementary school years.
This year we focused instruction on literacy experiences that support the Charleston County School District’s goal of all children reading on grade level. Our literacy interventionist developed a program that allowed her students to read texts at the same time as peers in other intervention programs across the county and collaborate as penpals. The students discussed elements of the text, asked questions about the stories, and learned about their friends across Charleston County. This experience expanded the students’ communication and fostered authentic literacy skills.
At Mount Pleasant Academy we strive to engage students in a variety of learning activities that help all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
