For the 2020-2021 school year, Long Middle School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by following our rigorous state standards, facilitating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) projects, creating opportunities for students to use world-class skills that will prepare them for our global economy upon graduation. Chesterfield County Schools strives to prepare all students to be productive citizens and exhibit life and career characteristics. The mission of Long Middle School is to educate ALL students to become successful adults. LMS is following the district’s leadership and fulfilling its mission by offering a challenging academic environment, a variety of extracurricular activities, and an assortment of Arts for our students.
We continue to serve as an Arts in Basic Curriculum school site. We believe the arts should be an integral part of education in order for our students to be well-rounded and competitive in the future. We are looking forward to incorporating innovative ways to integrate the arts within our curriculum. In addition to adding more art programs, our school continues to invest time in not only training teachers how to analyze data but also providing strategies and interventions to use in the classroom to suit the needs of our students at LMS. Our Title I funds are assisting us in providing smaller class sizes, a math and reading program which provides enrichment and remedial activities catered for our students, professional development supplies, and funding for our parent night events to educate and provide strategies on different topics for parents throughout the school year.
Our teachers and administration strive to accommodate the needs of our students by actively applying for grants. In order for our students to be competitive in this global world we live in, they must have access to technology and supplies to help them reach their full potential. This year, we secured more funding for STEAM projects and a new class for the 2021-2022 school year! Equipment and supplies were also purchased for the current arts programs, and much more!
Our athletic teams continue to be leaders on the court, fields, and within the community. They along with our Student Government and Beta Clubs take pride in providing community service to our local nursing homes, picking up litter along roadsides, hosting a food drive in the fall, and reading to our younger generation of students. Although the pandemic put a halt to some of our activities, the use of technology allowed us to go places and do things we would not have done before! We use our service learning opportunities to develop and enhance our students’ communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. In addition to the above activities, the school also participated in raising awareness and/or funds for Autism, Down Syndrome, and the March of Dimes.
As our motto states, “Together, We Make a Difference” at Long Middle School. Each person has a special role to ensure our students are equipped with the necessary skills they need to be successful students and leaders of tomorrow!
