J. L. Mann High School is helping all students develop the world class skills of the profile of the South Carolina graduate through model programs such as our Academy of Math, Science, and Technology. The Academy is just one example of how we have maintained a reputation for academic, extracurricular, and athletic excellence for 56 years.
The 2020-21 school year was one of many challenges and accomplishments for J. L. Mann High School students. The Graduating Class of 2021 received over $15,000,000 in higher education scholarships, 54 students were recognized as Palmetto Fellows, and 4 students were recognized as National Merit Finalists. The number of AP Scholars increased with 218 students being recognized as AP Scholars.
Many innovative programs continued at Mann in the midst of the pandemic for the 2020-2021 school year. Participation in the AP Capstone Diploma program increased to 62 students participating. The after school transportation and Mann Power tutoring programs continued to support achievement by reducing the number of students failing courses school-wide and we were able to improve these programs by adding paid tutoring. Additionally, students had the opportunity to participate in academic programs such as Accelerate, NewTech@Mann, Magnet, Fine Arts Center, and the Golden Strip Career Center.
J.L. Mann High School’s PTSA continues to be one of the largest and most active statewide for the 2020-21 school year. The PTSA awarded more than $10,000 in mini-grants to teachers, reimbursed more than $5000 for classroom supplies, and awarded $2500 in Academic Extra-Curricular Support. J. L. Mann PTSA also sponsored a “Lei off Drugs” Hawaiian themed Red Ribbon Week.
The pandemic created a challenging year for J. L. Mann High School athletics, but with the support of our parents and the hard work of our athletes and coaches, it proved to be successful one. More than 800 athletes competed in 21 sports and on 36 teams. This school year, 18 teams made the playoffs or qualified for state competitions. Girls XC, Boys Swimming, and Boys Lacrosse all claimed state championships. 84 individual athletes achieved all-region, and one athlete was named Regional Player of the Year for the fall and winter seasons, while 2 players were named Region Player of the year for the spring Season. Another athlete earned the SC Gatorade Woman’s Volleyball Player of the Year award. We had 21 All-State players and 12 players named to their sports’ North/South or All Star games. 14 athletes signed to continue their athletic careers at the next level. Our athletic teams also excelled academically. 14 teams achieved an average GPA of 4.0 or higher.
Through a combination of past accomplishments and a commitment to improvement, J. L. Mann High School will continue to meet the challenges of the 21st century with innovation and enthusiasm!
