Erwin Elementary is helping all students develop the world-class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Erwin is working with the Lancaster County School district to implement components of STEAM into all lessons. Professional Development is being provided to all staff members. We have chosen a team of STEAM Leaders who are excited about attending and presenting professional development in order for all lessons to include one of the 5 C’s of STEAM. Balanced literacy, which is led by our reading coach, continues to be a strong focus. One of our literacy goals is to provide opportunities for students to use Text Dependent Analysis to provide evidence to support their opinions when writing.
Erwin Elementary promotes a learning environment where students “live to love, love to learn, and live to love learning.” Erwin incorporates the South Carolina standards in language arts and mathematics to provide students with a challenging curriculum. In the 2020-2021 school year, we served 439 students in Prekindergarten to Grade 5. We have a student to teacher ratio of 20:1 for core subjects, and approximately 74% percent of our faculty members had advanced degrees.
Technology, problem-solving, and creativity are encouraged to provide opportunities to build world-class skills. Numerous programs are often available to provide outlets to promote world-class skills. Learning A-Z, DreamBox, Scholastic News, Social Studies Weekly, Discovery Education, and Study Island provides challenges for critical thinking. We offer Advanced Art, Girls on The Run, Chorus, and iLead to promote collaboration and teamwork. SMART Boards, Chromebooks, tablets, and computers are used throughout the day to encourage students to use technology. Students in grades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are each issued a Chromebook for use throughout the day; therefore, teachers use Google Classroom to push out many assignments.
Activities related to building life and career characteristics are embedded throughout the day. Beta Club and Relay for Life allow students to learn about work ethic and be self-motivated. We strive to create a positive environment that promotes both challenging academic standards and outstanding citizenship. Supportive parents, enthusiastic students, and creative teachers make Erwin Elementary a great place to learn.
