At Jane Edwards Elementary School we continue to help our students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate through creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. This school year began with an emphasis on COVID-19 safety protocols. All safety measures were taught and reinforced throughout the school year. End of year academic goals were set by individual students, with support from teachers and school administration. Our students engaged in personalized learning through adaptive digital content platforms: Dreambox, Lexia Core 5, Achieve3000, and iReady.
With a small student population, we were able to accommodate 100% of our students in-person throughout the school year. In September 2020, 90% of our students returned to school for in-person instruction. By February 2021, 95% of our students were receiving in-person instruction. To minimize the impact of COVID-19 disruptions and their impact on student learning, the Second Steps social-emotional learning program was utilized with all students. Additionally, school guidance and mental health services were available to students.
Our parents attended first semester parent-teacher conferences in-person, via Zoom, or on the telephone. During conferences, teachers provided tips to help parents support their children’s academic and social-emotional learning. Teachers continued to structure their classroom lessons for active student engagement. Throughout the school year, students participated in the production of our school news broadcast, multiple reading days, art projects, and lego club. The students at Jane Edwards Elementary School are engaged in world class skills and activities aligned with the Charleston County School District’s Strategic Plan and are being prepared for their future today.
