Woodland Elementary School is equipping all students to develop the World Class Skills defined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, nurturing, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our school vision: Where every leader succeeds in learning and life. We implement our vision by providing students with various opportunities to serve in meaningful leadership positions in classrooms, the school, and our community. Through these experiences, students are developing leadership skills, confidence, a sense of ownership and pride in their school and community, and the skills needed to be college and career ready.
At Woodland, students experience rigorous classroom instruction by teachers who are highly motivated and trained in instructional best practices. Teachers receive targeted training in such areas as using effective strategies that promote student learning, utilizing data to identify the instructional needs of individual students, and how to best support students emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. Our reading interventionists, literacy specialist, and school counselors provide specialized small group instruction and counseling designed to focus on academic behavior that will positively impact student performance in the classroom. Woodland remains student-centered and focused on addressing and meeting the needs of each individual child.
Woodland Elementary is very proud of our programs outside of the academic realm that focus on the development of the whole child. As a LEADER IN ME School, we consistently focus on incorporating the 8 Habits of an Effective Leader in all areas of life and developing the natural leadership potential that every child has within them. Our school counselors and teachers teach the 8 Habits of Leadership and embed leadership principles throughout all curricular areas and activities. We believe it is imperative that our students learn what it means to be a leader and understand how these skills will help to ensure success now and throughout their lives. We are equipping our students with the necessary skills to prepare them for college and their future careers.
In addition to assuming leadership roles and fulfilling specific job tasks, our students are engaged in service learning projects that are designed to help our students deepen their understanding of the world around them and how they can best make a difference in other people’s lives. Our BETA Club, Student Lighthouse, and Covey Clubs partner with a variety of service organizations each year. Some examples include providing needed supplies for disadvantaged students, raising money for local charitable organizations, collecting tabs from cans for the Ronald McDonald House, gathering canned goods for the local food bank, collecting items for animal shelters, and collecting gently used coats and clothing for needy students.
Woodland is fortunate to be able to partner with local businesses that provide mentors for our students. These dedicated volunteers meet weekly with their mentees to build and maintain supportive relationships that positively impact students’ self-esteem and motivate these young learners to become more responsible and self-directed. We believe that when the school, family, and community synergize together, all students have the greatest opportunity for success!
Woodland is very proud of the achievements that we received recently. We were awarded Excellent Report Card Rating and Palmetto's Gold awards for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years. Woodland was the recipient of the Palmetto's Finest Award for 2019-2020. During the 2020-2021 school year, our school counseling program met the criteria to become a Recognized ASCA Model Program by the American School Counselor Association. We know that these achievements would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, and students.
Woodland thanks you for your support as, together, we help develop our future South Carolina graduates and world leaders!
