East Edisto Middle School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by creating a culture where rigorous academics, meaningful relationships, and authentic learning experiences prepare students for success in high school, college, careers, and life. Guided by our HOWLL philosophy, Helping Others With Leadership and Love, we are committed to ensuring every student is challenged, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Our belief that “In this pack, no one runs alone” serves as the foundation for a learning environment where students are encouraged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
East Edisto develops World Class Knowledge through a commitment to high-quality instruction, continuous improvement, and data-informed decision making. Teachers collaborate in Professional Learning Communities to analyze student performance data, refine instructional practices, and provide targeted support through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports. The implementation of high-quality instructional materials, strategic use of NWEA MAP assessment data, and ongoing analysis of district common assessments ensure that instructional decisions are responsive to student needs. These efforts contributed to East Edisto earning an Excellent rating on the South Carolina School Report Card and being recognized as a Palmetto Silver Award recipient.
Students develop World Class Skills through engaging learning experiences that foster critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and technological proficiency. East Edisto’s STEM programs provide students with opportunities to solve authentic problems and apply their learning beyond the classroom. VEX Robotics Team 29485E, the Lady Wolves, advanced to the VEX Robotics World Championship, while Team 29485A, the Apollobots, qualified for state competition. First Lego League students advanced from district to regional competition and earned the Challenge Robot Design Award. East Edisto students also demonstrated excellence in problem solving and analytical thinking through MathCounts Gold-level achievement. Through these experiences, students learn to innovate, collaborate, and persevere while developing skills that will serve them in future academic and professional settings.
Creativity and communication are further cultivated through a thriving fine arts program. East Edisto’s band, orchestra, and chorus programs each earned Superior with Distinction honors at the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment. Additionally, In Bocca al Lupo became the first middle school tenor-bass choir invited to perform at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference. These accomplishments reflect students’ dedication, teamwork, discipline, and ability to communicate effectively through artistic expression.
East Edisto is equally committed to developing the Life and Career Characteristics outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Through our HOWLL framework and nationally recognized Jostens Renaissance program, students are encouraged to demonstrate leadership, responsibility, perseverance, and service to others. School-wide recognition systems and culture-building initiatives reinforce positive behaviors and foster a strong sense of belonging and purpose. Students actively engage in meaningful service-learning experiences that connect character development with real-world impact. Through HOWLL initiatives, students write thank-you letters to honor local veterans, participate in food drives supporting Meals On Wheels of Summerville, and join schoolwide efforts such as Hoops for Heart, raising funds for the American Heart Association. Additionally, East Edisto students participated in an ALS Walk that raised awareness and support for individuals and families affected by the disease. These experiences provide students with opportunities to demonstrate empathy, civic responsibility, and leadership while making a tangible difference in their community. Together, these efforts have helped cultivate a positive school culture where students are recognized for both who they are and how they contribute to others. This commitment to service, leadership, and character development is further reflected in East Edisto’s Jostens Renaissance School Culture Builder Award and Platinum School of Distinction designation, recognizing the school’s intentional focus on building a community where students and staff thrive.
Beyond the classroom, students have opportunities to build leadership, teamwork, and resilience through athletics, clubs, and extracurricular activities. During the 2024-2025 school year, East Edisto captured Dorchester County championships in volleyball, girls’ basketball, and boys’ basketball, while student-athletes also qualified for state competition in archery. Through participation in these programs, students develop the interpersonal skills, work ethic, and determination necessary for success in school and life.
East Edisto also provides meaningful opportunities for students to prepare for future careers and adult responsibilities through authentic, real-world experiences. Through Reality Town, eighth-grade students engage in financial literacy, career exploration, budgeting, and decision-making activities that mirror the responsibilities of adulthood. Additionally, East Edisto hosted a Career Expo featuring more than twenty community partners who provided students with hands-on opportunities to explore a wide variety of career pathways. Students interacted directly with professionals, asked questions about education and training requirements, and gained valuable insight into future career opportunities. This major initiative, supported by the School Improvement Council, strengthened connections between the school and community while helping students understand the relationship between their education, career aspirations, and future success. Together, these experiences foster the communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and career readiness skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
At East Edisto Middle School, we take great pride in preparing students not only for academic success, but also for meaningful lives of leadership, service, and achievement. Through rigorous instruction, innovative learning opportunities, strong relationships, and a commitment to continuous growth, we are helping every student develop the knowledge, skills, and characteristics necessary to become a successful South Carolina Graduate.
