At Oakbrook Middle School, we are proud to support the development of World Class Skills as outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our commitment to preparing students for future success is reflected in the numerous opportunities we provide for students to engage in interdisciplinary, real-world learning experiences. These experiences foster creativity, innovation, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and technological literacy—all essential skills for navigating an ever-evolving world.
We are dedicated to creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where students are both challenged and supported through strong relationships with staff, families, and community partners. Together, we strive to ensure every student reaches their maximum potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
True to our motto, “Above the Rest,” our approach to teaching and learning focuses on the whole child and aligns directly with the three core areas of the South Carolina Graduate Profile: World Class Knowledge, World Class Skills, and Life and Career Characteristics. Through rigorous instruction aligned to South Carolina State Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, students are provided with a strong academic foundation that prepares them for high school readiness and future success.
Our curriculum also provides opportunities for students to accelerate their learning through the GATE program, high school credit courses, and career pathway electives. Students needing additional support benefit from intervention-focused electives, targeted academic supports, and innovative programs such as Quarter Recovery and Academic Overtime, which have significantly contributed to improved student outcomes. Additionally, our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), in-school tutoring opportunities, and data-driven intervention practices ensure all students have access to the resources they need to succeed.
Over the past several years, Oakbrook Middle School has experienced significant academic and cultural growth. The school’s South Carolina State Report Card rating improved from Average to Excellent within a three-year span, reflecting the collective commitment of students, staff, and families to continuous improvement. During that same period, discipline referrals decreased dramatically, while parent satisfaction regarding school climate, communication, and the learning environment increased substantially.
A cornerstone of our school culture is the implementation of the Jostens Renaissance Program, which promotes a positive school climate through relationship-building, recognition, and a strong focus on student and staff success. Through quarterly Renaissance Rallies, students are celebrated for achievements in academics, attendance, and behavior, while also receiving opportunities for support and remediation when needed. Staff members are also recognized quarterly, reinforcing a culture of appreciation, encouragement, and collective excellence.
These sustained efforts have earned national recognition. Oakbrook Middle School was proudly named a 2025 Jostens Renaissance National Platinum Tier School of Distinction, the highest level of distinction awarded through the Jostens Renaissance program. In addition, Oakbrook Middle School was selected as a recipient of the National Schools to Watch designation through the Association for Middle Level Education and the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform, recognizing the school’s commitment to academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and strong organizational structures that support middle level learners.
In addition to academics, Oakbrook Middle School prioritizes celebrating student accomplishments and creating meaningful experiences that build school connectedness. Each month, the Core Value Student of the Month program recognizes students who exemplify district core values and leadership characteristics. Students and their families are invited to recognition breakfasts honoring their positive contributions to the school community.
To further celebrate growth and achievement, the school hosts MAP Growth Celebrations during the winter and spring semesters, recognizing students who demonstrate academic progress through engaging reward experiences such as courtyard celebrations, music, games, and food trucks. Quarterly Honor Roll Ceremonies celebrate students earning All A’s or A’s and B’s, while the Annual Awards Banquet honors excellence across academics, fine arts, leadership, and extracurricular involvement. The school year culminates with a meaningful 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony that celebrates students’ growth, accomplishments, and transition to high school.
Strong family and community partnerships remain essential to the success of Oakbrook Middle School. Our PTSA actively supports the school through volunteerism, teacher appreciation initiatives, testing support, and student-centered events. Likewise, the School Improvement Council collaborates with school leadership to strengthen family engagement and identify opportunities for continued growth and improvement.
Throughout the year, Oakbrook Middle School hosts a variety of family engagement events, including Literacy Night, Math Night, Technology Night, International Night, and Reading Night in partnership with the school’s Book Fair. These events provide opportunities for families to connect with the school community while celebrating student learning and achievement. One particularly impactful event is the Rising 6th Grade Parent Night, where incoming families tour the campus, meet teachers and staff, and learn about academic and extracurricular opportunities available to students.
Our commitment to preparing students for future success extends beyond the classroom through real-world learning opportunities such as 8th Grade Reality Town. Hosted by the School Counseling Department, this immersive experience allows students to manage budgets, navigate careers, pay bills, and make financial decisions that mirror adult responsibilities. Additionally, students participate in career exploration experiences such as the Be Pro, Be Proud initiative, which provides hands-on exposure to STEM and technical career pathways.
At Oakbrook Middle School, we take tremendous pride in the accomplishments of our students, staff, and community. Through rigorous instruction, meaningful relationships, intentional recognition systems, and a commitment to continuous improvement, we have created a learning environment where all students are empowered to thrive. As we look toward the future, we remain steadfast in our mission and proud to be a school that is truly “Above the Rest.”
