Orange Grove Charter School is committed to developing confident, caring, and responsible lifelong learners through a rigorous, standards-based instructional program aligned with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our charter status provides the autonomy to implement innovative, data-driven strategies that directly support student achievement and growth while allowing us to respond effectively to the needs of our students and community.
For 63 years, Orange Grove has proudly served Charleston families, first as a traditional public school and, for the past 20 years, as a conversion charter school. Throughout our history, we have maintained a strong tradition of excellence and earned distinguished recognition, including the Palmetto’s Finest Award and a National Blue Ribbon School designation. Through responsible fiscal management, we provide exceptional opportunities for students, including small class sizes, high school credit-bearing courses, grade-level interventionists, independently operated transportation, and cutting-edge technology.
Since expanding into middle school in 2015 with a sixth-grade cohort, Orange Grove has grown into a comprehensive Child Development program through 8th grade. Today, middle school students may earn up to three high school credits, and more than 60 percent are enrolled in advanced mathematics courses. Across state assessments and nationally normed measures, such as MAP and i-Ready, our students consistently exceed grade-level expectations, with many performing a full year above the national average. In addition, approximately half of our students in grades 3–8 have been identified as academically gifted and talented. The success of our students is driven by an outstanding faculty, 77 percent of whom hold advanced degrees. Their expertise, dedication, and commitment to continuous improvement have helped Orange Grove earn recognition as one of the top one percent of elementary schools in South Carolina.
A central focus of our work is ensuring literacy success for every child. Orange Grove is deeply committed to the district’s vision that by 2027, all students will read on grade level by fifth grade. To achieve this goal, we have aligned our literacy efforts with district priorities and initiatives, ensuring that instruction, intervention, and resource allocation are grounded in data and focused on student growth. Teachers and interventionists utilize universal screeners, progress-monitoring tools, and classroom assessments to identify students’ strengths and areas for improvement. This information is reviewed regularly through Professional Learning Communities, where grade-level teams analyze trends, refine instructional practices, and identify students who require targeted support. These collaborative teams also develop high-quality, standards-aligned lessons that incorporate evidence-based literacy practices, including explicit phonics instruction, vocabulary development, and structured opportunities for reading and writing.
Weighted Student Funding has played a critical role in strengthening our literacy initiatives. These resources allow us to employ interventionists at every elementary grade level, providing students with targeted, small-group instruction tailored to their specific needs. Through ongoing assessment and progress monitoring, interventionists work closely with classroom teachers to accelerate reading growth and ensure students receive timely support. Weighted Student Funding has also enabled us to maintain smaller class sizes, creating learning environments where teachers can provide more individualized attention, deliver personalized feedback, and effectively differentiate instruction. These conditions are essential for fostering literacy development and ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Orange Grove’s commitment to excellence extends beyond academics. Our vibrant school community is enriched by more than 20 active business partnerships and an exceptionally engaged Parent Teacher Organization. A wide range of extracurricular opportunities allows students to explore their interests, develop leadership skills, and engage with their peers. Academic and leadership programs include the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Student Council, Robotics Club, and the WTMN News Show. Students may also participate in Studio Art, Chorus, Steel Drums, and Musical Theater, as well as service-oriented and enrichment activities such as National History Day, Recycling Club, mentoring programs, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Athletic opportunities include basketball, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, cross country, and surfing.
Families play an integral role in the life of the school, coming together throughout the year for cherished community events such as the Fun Run, Spring Fling, Family Bingo Night, Silent Auction, and The Giving Market. This strong partnership between school and home helps create a culture where students feel supported, connected, and inspired to succeed.
At Orange Grove, we also believe in fostering compassion, service, and social responsibility. Students and families regularly collaborate to support local charities through food drives, pet supply collections, and hands-on service projects. Our Backpack Buddies program, supported by school families and business partners, provides weekly food bags to students in need, helping ensure access to nutritious meals over weekends and holidays. These experiences teach students the importance of empathy, civic engagement, and giving back to the community.
Orange Grove Charter School is more than a place to learn - it is a place where students are challenged academically, nurtured personally, and inspired to become creative and critical thinkers. We celebrate individual differences, foster meaningful relationships, and provide opportunities for every child to thrive. Together, we are building a community of learners prepared for success in high school, college, careers, and life.
