Burke High School 2025–2026 School Narrative
At Burke High School, tradition and innovation work hand in hand to create a learning community where students are challenged, supported, and inspired to succeed. Proudly serving the Charleston Peninsula, Burke builds upon a rich legacy of excellence while expanding opportunities that prepare students for college, career, leadership, and lifelong success. From advanced academics and career-focused experiences to the arts and athletics, Burke is committed to helping every student discover their strengths and envision a bright future.
Each academic year at Burke begins with purposeful intention, high expectations, and a shared commitment to student growth. Aligned with Charleston County School District's mission and the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, Burke High School strives to empower every student with the academic foundation, social-emotional skills, and real-world experiences needed for college, career, and responsible citizenship.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring every student is equipped not only to succeed in the classroom but also to thrive in life. The spirit of the Power of One Degree continues to shape our work as we expand opportunities, strengthen student achievement, and inspire our scholars to envision new possibilities for themselves and their futures. This mindset of growth, excellence, and opportunity is woven throughout every facet of the Burke experience and continues to guide us as we prepare students to lead with confidence, purpose, and pride.
Burke continues to provide students with access to rigorous and engaging academic opportunities. Our Advanced Placement Academy and dual enrollment programs enable students to earn college credit while in high school through partnerships with Trident Technical College and the National Education Opportunity Network (NEON). In addition, Burke Scholars Academy, in partnership with the College of Charleston, continues to expand access to advanced coursework, dual-credit opportunities, and college-level experiences, reinforcing our commitment to preparing scholars for success beyond graduation.
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) remains a foundational pillar of our college- and career-readiness efforts. With all ninth-grade students participating in AVID and WICOR strategies—writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading—embedded throughout instruction, Burke continues to cultivate the habits of mind, resilience, and confidence students need to achieve their goals and navigate future opportunities.
Our Career and Technology Education programs continue to flourish, offering pathways in Business Information Management, Culinary Arts, Digital Art and Design, Engineering, Health Science, and Building Construction. Students benefit from expanded opportunities for career exploration, applied learning, and real-world experiences that help bridge the gap between classroom learning and future careers. Emerging partnerships, including collaboration with the American College of the Building Arts, provide students with exposure to preservation, design, and construction fields while further strengthening Burke's commitment to workforce development and innovation.
Burke also continues to play an important role in the evolving educational landscape of the Charleston Peninsula. Through the Peninsula Promise initiative and ongoing collaboration with Simmons-Pinckney Middle School, the College of Charleston (CofC), the American College of the Building Arts (ACBA), community organizations, and business partners, Burke is helping expand access to advanced academics, innovative learning experiences, arts education, and family-centered supports. Burke also looks forward to serving as the home of the Peninsula's new Family Engagement Center, further strengthening connections among schools, families, and community resources.
The arts remain an essential part of the Burke experience. Through initiatives such as Arts for All and the Linard McCloud Cultural Arts Collective, Burke is expanding opportunities for students to engage in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, and cultural experiences that celebrate creativity, honor the school's rich artistic heritage, and inspire artistic excellence.
Our educators are driven by purpose and guided by data. We embrace rigorous, equitable instruction and uphold a standard of excellence in teaching and learning. We are deeply committed to closing the achievement gap and cultivating scholars prepared to become innovative, compassionate, and competitive global citizens, a commitment that has resulted in significant academic progress during the 2025–2026 school year.
At Burke, we don't just believe in student potential—we nurture it. We don't just envision success—we equip our students to live it, lead it, and sustain it for lifelong success. Together, we honor our proud legacy while preparing the next generation of Bulldogs to lead, serve, and thrive in an ever-changing world.
