Buena Vista Elementary School Profile
Buena Vista Elementary School offers a challenging, progressive, and character-building educational experience that empowers students to become self-directed learners, outstanding citizens, and active contributors in a collaborative learning community. Our students develop the creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Our school proudly serves a richly diverse community, with students representing more than 35 countries and cultures. This diversity is further reflected in our faculty and staff, creating an inclusive environment where every child is valued and encouraged to achieve academic excellence.
Academic achievement remains our highest priority. For the 2025–2026 school year, Buena Vista Elementary once again earned the Palmetto Gold Award for High Performance, marking our tenth consecutive year receiving this prestigious recognition. Our faculty is committed to ensuring that every student masters the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. The results of our most recent SC READY assessments continue to rank Buena Vista among the highest-performing elementary schools in both our district and the state in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Our continuous improvement goals reflect our commitment to excellence. For the 2026–2027 school year, our goal is to increase the percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations on the SC READY assessments from 78% to 80% in Mathematics and from 81% to 83% in English Language Arts. Over the past three years, our faculty has participated in extensive professional learning centered on student discourse, engagement, and high-impact instructional practices, resulting in significant gains in student achievement. We also continue to strengthen our work as a Professional Learning Community (PLC), ensuring collaboration and continuous improvement across all grade levels.
Technology and innovation are hallmarks of the Buena Vista experience. As one of the original ten schools selected for the district's Digital Learning Community, we have remained at the forefront of educational technology. Every student at Buena Vista has designed and created an original project using our 3D printers, giving all learners authentic opportunities to apply creativity, engineering, and design thinking.
Our commitment to innovation expanded this year with the addition of a laser engraving and cutting system, which launched our first student entrepreneurship program. Students in our Multi-Categorical Special Education program developed and operated their own business, producing customized products while learning valuable workplace and entrepreneurial skills. Their inaugural venture generated more than $1,000 in sales within two days, and the students chose to donate the proceeds to a charitable cause—demonstrating compassion, leadership, and community service in action.
As both a National Blue Ribbon School and a Palmetto Gold School, Buena Vista continues to foster a culture of professional excellence. Our educators regularly share best practices beyond our campus, with three to five teachers presenting annually at national conferences, including the National Blue Ribbon Schools Conference. Their leadership reflects our commitment to continuous learning and educational innovation.
Character development is woven into every aspect of our school culture. Buena Vista has fully embraced The Leader in Me process. It is proud to be recognized as a Lighthouse School, a distinction awarded to schools that demonstrate excellence in leadership, student empowerment, and continuous improvement. Through this framework, students develop leadership skills, personal responsibility, collaboration, and the confidence to discover and use their unique strengths.
At Buena Vista Elementary, excellence is not simply an expectation—it is our tradition. Through rigorous academics, innovative technology, meaningful leadership opportunities, and a caring, inclusive community, we continue to prepare every student for success in school, in their future careers, and in life.
