Michael C. Riley Elementary and Early Childhood Center’s goal is to help all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our core beliefs include bringing out the leadership potential of each child through a learning-through-leadership model, The Leader in Me. We have established systems and practices that foster leadership development by encouraging students to apply the Eight Habits, assume meaningful roles, and actively participate in their learning community. Accountability systems are used to measure and evaluate individual, classroom, grade-level, and school-wide data points through Wildly Important Goals (WIGs). We were proud to discover that overall school satisfaction was evident in the Measurable Results Assessment (MRA) survey administered in May 2026, with improvements noted in leadership, culture, and academics.
We provide differentiated instruction and appropriate interventions to meet each child’s individual needs. Through the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) approach, our highly trained and qualified staff successfully design engaging lessons and build a sense of community and shared purpose. To meet the needs of our Multilanguage Learners, we employ seven MLP teachers who serve students in reading, writing, speaking, math, language development, and monitoring support. All classrooms focus on delivering effective daily instruction, and a coherent, viable curriculum is driven by state standards and school data. Twenty-first-century skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation are integrated into daily instruction.
Michael C. Riley and ECC students continued to develop strong academic knowledge, along with the social and emotional skills necessary to successfully achieve high levels of college and career readiness beyond the elementary years. We experienced many accomplishments throughout the year. Our school was recertified for the third time as a Lighthouse Leader in Me School. Thirty-five students were identified as Academically Gifted and Talented in grades three through five. Forty-one students exited the Multilanguage Learner Program based on growth demonstrated on the 2026 ACCESS assessment. Twenty-three students were featured in the district’s publication River of Words for their artwork or poetry. In the spring, our school finished in second place overall in the district’s first annual IXL March Mathness Competition for elementary schools and earned third place for overall student performance districtwide. Additionally, one fourth-grade class earned the IXL Leaderboard Challenge Award for Beaufort County School District elementary schools.
Our students have many opportunities to experience educational leadership roles at our school. Opportunities for students include participating in application processes for speaking presentations and school tours, as well as facilitating monthly classroom and grade-level town hall meetings that encourage student voice and collaboration. Daily classroom morning meetings focus on the eight habits and character pillars to reinforce core values in all students. Students’ literacy skills continue to thrive through a balanced literacy approach and the district’s one-to-one technology initiative. Individual devices are provided to students to engage in research and academic reinforcement. Other school-wide initiatives that cultivate leadership include student-led conferences, classroom counseling lessons, an active Student Lighthouse Team, community service projects, and numerous clubs and extracurricular activities.
Our school fosters strong family and community involvement through MLP family events held three times annually, curriculum-focused events such as Curriculum and Family Fitness Night, and partnerships like the Happy Feet event co-sponsored with the Rotary Club of Bluffton. Additional engagement opportunities include student-led conferences, WIG celebrations, and parenting challenges designed to reinforce the use of the Leader in Me habits at home. Each spring, our school hosts an International Festival, Project Unify Special Olympics, and Spring Arts Festival. This year, we also hosted our first annual Michael C. Riley Week, which integrated academic standards with the leadership traits exemplified by our namesake. We welcome and appreciate continued involvement from our families and community stakeholders and look forward to strengthening these partnerships in the coming year.
At Michael C. Riley Elementary and Early Childhood Center, we are proud to be a Title I school and remain committed to building upon our success in the year ahead. Together, we Learn, Love, and Lead!
