W. G. Sanders Middle School helps all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing innovative, transformative, and personalized learning experiences for each student in grades 6–8. This year has been defined by a renewed focus on student engagement, equity, and excellence as we continue our mission of preparing well-rounded, future-ready learners equipped for success in a dynamic, interconnected world.
In our Traditional Education Program, we maintain high academic expectations while cultivating a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. Through standards-based instruction and differentiated support, students are challenged to reach their full educational potential. This year, we expanded the implementation of Visible Thinking Routines to deepen student engagement and critical thinking. These strategies have helped traditional learners make their thinking visible, organize their ideas, and reflect more deeply on their learning. Paired with collaborative projects, interactive lessons, and activities like Quiz Bowl, Science Fair, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), students sharpen their problem-solving, communication, and analytical skills—core components of the South Carolina Graduate Profile.
Our Montessori Program continues to emphasize student-led learning, independence, and discovery. Rooted in a philosophy of respect and curiosity, Montessori students engage with carefully prepared environments and hands-on materials that encourage exploration. Visible Thinking Strategies were used to empower Montessori learners further to articulate their thought processes, explore multiple perspectives, and make connections across content areas. These routines align seamlessly with the Montessori approach, allowing students to construct meaning, collaborate with peers, and develop critical reasoning skills in authentic, meaningful ways. As a result, our students demonstrate growth in self-direction, creativity, and a deeper sense of academic ownership.
The Career Magnet Program bridges classroom learning with real-world application. Through career exploration, mentorships, and partnerships with local industries, students are introduced to a variety of professional pathways and future opportunities. This year, students engaged in Visible Thinking Tools such as “Think-Puzzle-Explore” and “Claim-Support-Question” to analyze complex workplace scenarios, reflect on career interests, and problem-solve collaboratively. These routines enhance the development of soft skills such as adaptability, initiative, and critical inquiry—essential traits for thriving in today’s global workforce. Whether exploring fields in STEM, business, public service, or the arts, our students are preparing to lead with confidence and purpose.
At W. G. Sanders Middle School, our commitment to developing the World Class Skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate remains unwavering. By embedding visible thinking practices into all aspects of learning, we foster a culture of metacognition, innovation, and resilience. Our students are encouraged not only to learn but to understand how they learn—an essential trait of lifelong learners and thoughtful citizens.
As we reflect on the year’s accomplishments, we celebrate the remarkable growth of our students and the unwavering support of our dedicated educators, families, and community partners. Together, we are shaping a future where every student is empowered to achieve, contribute, and thrive.
