Meeting Street Academy – Spartanburg is a public charter school focused on developing world-class citizens and leaders.
SCHOOL HISTORY
Meeting Street Academy – Spartanburg opened its doors as a charter school in 2024-25, allowing it to expand its reach and accept students beyond its attendance zone. As a charter school, Meeting Street Academy has more independence and flexibility to make decisions on personnel, training, calendar, and curriculum. The school initially was founded in 2012, and at different times, it has operated as a private school, a traditional neighborhood school, and a Public School of Innovation.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- Exceptional teaching: Teachers have high expectations for students, deliver instruction effectively, and use data to ensure all students’ needs are met. Our commitment to growth and innovation drives us to constantly improve our practices and deliver a student experience that meets the demands of today and the possibilities of tomorrow. We use a best-in-class, standards-based curricula, including the science of reading.
- College-focused: With a school-wide focus on college enrollment, the vast majority of students have established and maintained a college savings fund with Credit Union Partners. Families have saved more than $50,000 toward future college tuition, and they can earn donations to their children’s college savings accounts.
- Character development: Students focus on the research-based traits that successful people demonstrate, including grit, gratitude, optimism, empathy, citizenship, integrity, self-control, and curiosity. Adults model these traits for students, and they’re highlighted in class readings and in parent discussions.
- Strong early childhood education: Children can enroll as 3-year-olds, which is earlier than other local public schools. Our pre-kindergarten program offers academic, social, and emotional support to ensure kindergarten readiness.
- Family support: Our school has a Family Academy, which helps families learn how to best support their children’s educational journey. Parents earn incentives for participation, such as healthy food baskets or museum passes.
- Extended school day: The traditional school day is 7:10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and the school remains open until 5:30 p.m. for students to receive additional academic support and enrichment programming.
- More than academics: We offer a multitude of extracurricular activities, including Student Council, basketball, Beta Club, and Brown Girls Read. The school even has an entrepreneurship offering during which students write and present business proposals, and a portion of their earnings goes back to the community.
- Community partnerships: Partnerships play a vital role in our school’s success, including meaningful collaborations with Denny’s and the city of Spartanburg.
- Strong mentorship program: More than 80 mentors meet with students weekly to help students learn, grow, and feel valued.
