Oakview Elementary School is helping all students develop World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We create a “Habitat for Learning” by challenging students to think critically in order to reach their full potential, by promoting continuous and collaborative professional development for and among all teachers, and by engaging the school community and its parents in ongoing partnerships.
Our teachers pursue research-based instructional strategies to use in the classroom such as: small group guided reading and math, technology integration, web-based individualized instruction, arts integration, and more! This year, all K5-3rd grade teachers participated in LETRS training. Kindergarten and first grade teachers also implemented Reading Horizons, a phonics instruction program. Both of these initiatives supported the school’s efforts to align its literacy practices to the Science of Reading. This year alone, the faculty received over $6,000 in grant funding to carry out innovative instruction. With continued “Excellent” report card ratings, 16 consecutive Palmetto Gold/Silver Awards, and over 40,000 volunteer hours logged in a typical year, Oakview takes pride in the accomplishments of its students, teachers, parents, and community. Oakview was again named a U.S. News and World Report Best Elementary School in South Carolina, ranking in the top 25 out of 997 elementary and middle schools across South Carolina. The school was recognized by Greenville County Schools as a Top 10% performer in ELA and Math. These recognitions reflect the school’s commitment to academic excellence and its supportive learning environment.
The 2024-2025 school theme was “Oakview . . . Where Learning Soars!” (OWLS) Through rigorous instruction in the classroom, multiple student leadership opportunities, and numerous before and after school clubs, our Oakview Owls have soared high this year! The school connects students with life and career opportunities through its partnerships with community organizations. For example, the Warehouse Theater delivered lessons in the performing arts and the American Society of Civil Engineers hosts a bridge building contest annually. In addition, Oakview offers a wide variety of programs and student opportunities such as artist in residence, author visits, an overnight Barrier Island field trip, chess club, chorus, Columbia State House field trip, Cultural Arts Festival, the daily Owl News Network (ONN) broadcast with green screen, cheer club, archery club, sculpture club, gifted education, Grandparents Day, Lego robotics, morning tutors, parent workshops, Space Day, a walking track, and much more! This year, the PTA completed its final phase of playground upgrades with the installation of a large play structure being added to our campus. Oakview playgrounds are second to none!
With a comprehensive 2024-2025 through 2028-2029 Strategic Plan in place, Oakview sets annual goals for improved student performance, while at the same time, continuing to focus on teaching the “whole child.” Through the efforts of parents, faculty, and community partners, we anticipate success as we fulfill Oakview’s school mission!
