Kelly Miller Elementary School is dedicated to developing the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate in all its students. We foster a learning environment that challenges students to think critically, collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, and express their creativity. Life and career characteristics such as integrity, perseverance, and a global mindset are embedded throughout our school culture. At KMES, we promote a Growth Mindset—instilling in students the belief that intelligence can be developed and that challenges are essential for growth. We are committed to continuous improvement, innovative teaching strategies, and lifelong learning.
Our teachers engage in regular professional development, including Data Team meetings, Vertical Articulation Sessions, Grade Level Team collaborations, Core Subject Committees, and Arts Integration training. Instruction is designed to be rigorous and engaging through our S.T.E.A.M.M. framework, which integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Medical connections across all core subjects. Students benefit from instruction led by highly qualified educators who deliver world-class knowledge aligned with state curriculum standards.
Academically, we focus on building strong pathways for student achievement and success. School-wide initiatives in reading, math, science, and writing are supported by innovative programs such as the ROAR Café Reading Room, Project-/Problem-Based Learning, the Math Application Learning Lab, and Coding and Robotics classes. Looking ahead, we will expand our support structures by implementing a Reading Interventionist Lab and Pre-Algebra Enrichment for students who excel in mathematics.
Artistically, KMES offers students rich opportunities to engage in a sequential, standards-based arts curriculum. Students participate in visual and performing arts programs, including Jazz Band, Percussion and Wind Ensembles, Concert Bands, Choruses, Honors Art, Honors Dance, Tiny Tumblers Gymnastics, and a variety of afterschool activities that enhance creativity and expression.
Social-emotional development is fostered through programs that build character, leadership, and a sense of community. Initiatives such as the Principal's Student Advisory Committee, Royal G.E.M.S., and Tied for Success mentoring provide students with role models and opportunities for growth. Our school-wide P.A.W.S. (Positive Actions With Support) initiative fosters positive behavior and decision-making while providing support to help students succeed by redirecting negative behaviors and promoting self-regulation and accountability.
We are proud of our school’s achievements, partnerships, and community involvement. Kelly Miller has proudly served as an Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) site for ten years and was recently honored as an ABC School of Distinction. Our school participates annually in service learning through the United Way and American Heart Association. Strong partnerships with Winthrop University, Bethlehem United Methodist Church, St. Paul Baptist Church, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and Blackjack Baptist Church further enrich the educational experience of our students.
