Camden Middle School is helping all students develop world class skills and the life career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by developing confident, responsible, and competent learners. Our dedication to our motto of “SOARing to Excellence” is demonstrated in the implementation of best practices and continuous professional development.
We are proud of the accomplishments and growth we have experienced this year. Academically, we saw positive growth based on our MAP scores and their correlation to student performance on SC Ready. We celebrated our students' efforts and growth on MAP and other academic achievements consistently throughout the year.
The CMS library and our literacy initiatives as a school were a source of pride. Students participated in reading celebrations during the school year, and there were a number of special projects through our library. Family literacy night is a highlight in the fall. Social studies classes in 7th grade read novels from each continent studied during the year and 6th grade classes read novels set in the major time periods studied in history.
In regards to our school community, we also saw positive gains in every category of our parent surveys which will be reflected on our school report card. These gains were due in part to the family engagement opportunities we offered — parent universities, family literacy night, 8th grade parent night, Spanish Night, and other opportunities throughout the year. We also introduced clubs, which were a great success overall, as they provided students and staff unique opportunities to learn new skills, participate in healthy outlets, and in general boost the morale of the school.
Our Beta Club finished first in the state and nation in service hours, and ultimately was nationally recognized with MVP status by the national Beta Club organization. Our student council worked diligently to serve our school community, and raised thousands of dollars to support students in need and other school-specific needs. Student Council also sponsored our school’s first ever Color Run, which was a big success in regards to school and local community involvement.
In athletics, our girls basketball teams won the region championships, and our boys finished second. We had winning seasons in volleyball, football and wrestling as well. Our wrestling program had one of the most successful seasons in program history, with multiple wrestlers finishing top five in the state for their weight class.
In the arts, we are proud of the achievements we saw this past year. Our chorus program had a number of wonderful performances, including opening for our community’s annual Unity Walk, in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr.. Our band program continues to grow and improve as well. We had a number of art students have their pieces displayed in our district art show, with a few students placing in the top three of different categories. One student also received national recognition for their art work focused on a logo regarding school safety, sponsored by the United States Attorney’s Office.
We are thankful for the support provided to our school and students, and realize that any success at Camden Middle School is the result of a team effort between parents, students, staff, and our community.
