At Sumter High School, the commitment to fostering excellence in every aspect of student life is evident. This year, the faculty and staff have set high expectations across academics, fine arts, athletics, character education, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. Sumter High is determined to help every student develop world-class skills and the life and career characteristics outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
We pride ourselves in our unique and rigorous academic programs designed to challenge and prepare students for their futures. From honors classes and Advanced Placement (AP) courses to Dual Enrollment opportunities with the University of South Carolina and Central Carolina Technical College, the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and Career and Technology Education (CTE) courses, our curriculum is diverse and comprehensive. Each class and educational opportunity strongly emphasizes critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity to enhance every learning experience.
Our school is fortunate to have a team of dedicated, talented, diverse, and caring teachers who are passionate about their students' success. Their support extends from the superintendent, district office staff, and board of trustees, all focused on student safety, education, and development. Their unwavering support and passion drive our school's success, and we are confident in their leadership.
Each year, our students rise to the challenge of enrolling in rigorous, upper-level coursework, a testament to their dedication and our school's commitment to excellence. Their achievements have earned our academic programs local, national, and international recognition, a source of immense pride. The AVID Program, serving students from ninth to twelfth grade, hones their organizational and interpersonal skills, ensuring they are college and career-ready upon graduation. The success of our graduating class, marked by numerous awards and scholarships, is a testament to their hard work and our school's commitment to their success. Two of our students received national merit recognitions as semifinalists and finalists, a prestigious honor distinguishing them as some of the country's brightest and most promising young scholars. For the first time in our school history, one of our students was awarded the National Merit Scholarship. We are proud of their achievements and the recognition they bring to our school.
Sumter High School students are indeed academically inclined and also excel in a wide range of extracurricular activities. They showcase their talents in orchestra, chorus, band, and drama competitions, earning high ratings and distinguished awards. Many of our students lead organizations at the state and national levels, demonstrating their leadership skills. Participation in these activities is about winning and developing life and career characteristics such as perseverance, determination, self-direction, collaboration, and teamwork.
Athletics at Sumter High School is another source of pride. The school celebrated the state championship in girls' basketball. We were also the region champions in football and girls' basketball. Over forty senior student-athletes signed to play at the collegiate level, and numerous athletes received postseason accolades at the region, state, and all-star levels.
The faculty and staff at Sumter High School embrace the challenge of constantly evolving and growing as professionals in the ever-changing field of education. Their ongoing professional development ensures they can provide all students with the best educational opportunities.
In partnership with the Sumter community, Sumter High School is dedicated to preparing the next generation of leaders. Our school's "Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow, Gamecocks Forever" motto encapsulates this commitment. Every decision made at Sumter High School is focused on the students' safety, education, and development to ensure they are well-prepared for their futures. Our school is more than just a building; it is a community, and we are all responsible for shaping the future of our students.
