Mary H. Wright is dedicated to helping all students develop the World-Class Skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing challenging learning experiences in a safe and nurturing environment. Student growth in literacy is supported through a balanced approach that includes whole-group instruction, small-group instruction, and individualized instruction.
The MHW staff is committed to providing student-centered instruction based on state standards, preparing students to become active, compassionate, lifelong learners and responsible, world-class citizens. We also offer proactive interventions for all grade levels to effectively address student deficits. Our school has fully implemented Reading Recovery to support first-grade students.
Teachers collaborate with the Reading Coach and the Continuous Improvement Coach, receiving direct guidance to make informed instructional decisions, ensuring that the needs of each student are met. Our current vision for MHW is to be widely recognized for exceptional student achievement, which will contribute to making our community a better place to work and live.
Our community partnerships at Mary H. Wright are essential to our school’s success. The Episcopal Church of the Advent collaborates with us to subsidize field trips, provide tutoring for students, plan special events, and support our classroom teachers. We host a school carnival that attracts many community members and families, and the Episcopal Church also helps enhance our school plays.
Nearby churches, including St. John’s Lutheran Church and Majority Baptist Church, assist by packing food bags for students to take home on weekends. Mt. Moriah Baptist Church volunteers come weekly to facilitate the Good News Club for groups of students after school.
In addition, we are fortunate to partner with Kids Clubs of the Upstate. In the 2024-2025 school year, 115 students from first through fifth grades participated in our club, with several alumni from our neighboring middle school assisting in various activities. We remain committed to providing a range of academic opportunities complemented by community outreach projects. We sincerely appreciate the support of our school community as we strive to support and challenge our students to reach their full potential.
Students at our school use technology to conduct research, create and publish content, and produce performances that integrate the arts with other subjects. We are proud to offer 1:1 MacBooks for all students in grades 2-5, while kindergarten and first-grade students use 1:1 iPads. Our Technology Integration Specialist supports both teachers and students in effectively incorporating technology into instruction and assessment.
The Spartanburg Academic Movement is providing valuable support to Mary H. Wright Elementary School (MHW) in several ways. They offer ongoing training for our Continuous Improvement Coach, who collaborates with grade-level teams to plan instruction, analyze data, and train teachers in Balanced Literacy methods to support our students better. This coach, along with our Reading Coach, works with K-5 teachers in grade-level teams for two hours each week. Additionally, they have assisted by funding a 3K program at Mary Wright, which allows us to reach our students at an earlier age.
Students at MHW have the opportunity to experience art in various forms, which helps them connect to the core curriculum through innovation, problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity. They can showcase their learning through performances and project displays, featuring their visual art throughout the school and district. Additionally, students participate in our chorus and perform in our annual spring musical.
With the support of our community partnerships and a heightened focus on communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, we are confident that Mary H. Wright Elementary School will continue to strive for excellence in student leadership and academics. We want our students to play an active role in making the world a better place!
