At Mount Pleasant Academy (MPA), our faculty and staff are dedicated to engaging students in various experiences that foster learning and innovation skills, enhance information and technology skills, and support students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for future success. We are unwavering in our commitment to the Charleston County School District's goal of all students reading on grade level by fifth grade in 2027.
This year at Mount Pleasant Academy, we have taken a unique approach to fostering creativity and critical thinking skills in our students. With the generous support of our PTA, we have provided every student with the opportunity to participate in an artist residency program, a distinctive initiative offered in partnership with various organizations. Kindergarten and first-grade students participated in performances communicating ideas and information through movement. Third graders have been learning the artistry of sweetgrass basket making. Our second and fourth graders have been exploring the historical significance of indigo and participating in the tradition of indigo dying. And our fifth-grade students have been learning about impressionist art through a school mural project. These unique opportunities not only foster creativity but also equip our students with world-class skills, setting them up for future success.
Our teacher-librarian provides experiences that support the Charleston County School District’s goal of all children reading on grade level. This includes our library ambassadors program for students in grades three through five. This program encourages a love of reading by giving ambassadors advanced opportunities to preview and share new library materials. Our library also participated in the district-wide Battle of the Books competition, encouraging students to read the South Carolina Children’s Book Award nominees. Finally, our teacher-librarian hosts author visits as part of a well-rounded library plan. Our library is an essential part of our literacy program.
At Mount Pleasant Academy, we strive to engage students in various learning activities that help all students develop the World-Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our teachers focus on activities that support student literacy and the foundational goal of reading on grade level by fifth grade.
