Georgetown Middle School is a Title I school that serves a diverse learning community of 772 students in grades 6-8. Our school is helping all students develop the world class skills and life career characteristics associated with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by preparing today’s learners to be tomorrow’s leaders in academics, fine arts, and athletics. At GMS, we believe that all members of the community must be life-long learners for the community to remain healthy and to continue to grow. We believe that all children can learn, and they will rise to the level that teachers and parents expect of them. Our teachers have high expectations for all of their students, regardless of their current achievement levels or any challenges they may face. GMS staff members strive to develop independent, critical thinkers who display positive character traits of good citizenship. To accomplish this goal, professional development is offered throughout the year at the state, district, and school levels. These meetings focus on Student Learning Objectives (SLOs), MDC and LDC, PBIS, MTSS and instructional strategies that met the needs of our entire staff.
Many of our students participate in extracurricular activities including fine arts and athletics. Our band received a Superior Rating at the state level. Our Junior Academic team won first place all-around at the GCSD Junior Academic Bowl. The drama class put on a fantastic performance of The Lion King Jr. to a standing-room only crowd. The GMS football team was region champions and the GMS girls’ basketball team was region runner-ups. These were just some of our many accomplishments during the 2018-2019 school term.
One of the key components of an effective school is a safe and orderly environment. Without a safe and orderly environment, quality instruction and learning falters. One of our main goals is to ensure that parents, students, and teachers feel confident in the fact that their school is safe. We are committed to keeping our school free from violence and bullying. We are currently in our sixth year of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), which involves a commitment to teaching and reinforcing responsible, respectful, courteous and kind behaviors. Through programs like PBIS and Capturing Kids’ Hearts, which helps in building relationships and processes that bring out the best people, we have seen positive impacts on student behavior and on our overall school environment.
Georgetown Middle School remains steadfast in its commitment to working with our stakeholders, community, and families so that all students experience success. We believe our students are “Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow.”
