Swansea High School (SHS) is cultivating an environment in which all students are able to develop world-class skills, content knowledge, life, and career characteristics synonymous with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our purpose is to empower our students to acquire the characteristics necessary to evolve into globalized citizens, and we strive to accomplish this by becoming a personalized system of learning.
Our school cultivates a learning community built on the power to grow, learn, and serve with the purpose of helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Our students use inquiry-based learning to develop a growth mindset. Collaboration, communication, critical thinking, student agency, and perseverance drive our focus, as we grow our curriculum at Swansea High School.
Swansea High School achieved many academic accomplishments during the 2018-2019 school year. Our Jobs for America’s Graduates program was the Jefferson Award state champion, and their SIA team placed second in the nation. The Agricultural Science program received a Superior Rating National Chapter Award and placed second at the State Poultry evaluation competition. Swansea High School had 10 students qualify for the National History Day state competition and sent one student to the national competition in Washington, DC. Our BETA club chapter received first, second, and third place awards in the National competition.
A tradition of excellence in the arts and athletics continued for Swansea High School during the 2018-19 school year. We had nine sports participate in SCHSL playoff games for their respective sports. Our girls varsity basketball and girls varsity soccer were Region 5-3A champions. Both teams made it to the Elite 8 in the SCHSL playoffs. Swansea High School had seven athletes selected for all-state honors and 36 all-region selections. Three athletes were selected as region players of the year, five athletes were selected to participate in the North/South game, and three athletes were selected to participate in the NC/SC All-star game. Preston Jacob won an individual state title in wrestling for Swansea.
Our Special Olympics Unified athletes qualified 11 athletes for state games. We had three unified athletes and three unified partners qualify and participate in the National Games held in Seattle, WA. The band and chorus program were represented by 45 students. The marching band received a superior rating at the State Concert and Jazz Festival and was the Lower State Champion and State Runner-up in AA competition. Eleven students were selected for honor band. Student agency has been the key for success, as our BETA Club, JAG, HOSA, FFA, Academy Spanish Project Learning class, and JROTC served over 500(+) community service hours during the 2018-2019 school year. JROTC has been recognized as an Honor Unit with Distinction, only awarded to the top twenty five percent of programs in the country.
Swansea High School strives to implement and grow best practices that will accentuate the characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. We endeavor to provide a framework for lifelong learning that will benefit all of our stakeholders. Working together as a professional learning community and sharing this framework for success with our parents, guardians, students and community will accelerate the transfer of skills and knowledge needed in the 21st century educational model.
Thank you, Lexington School District Four teachers, parents, and community for all that you do to help empower our students to become global citizens.
