We are very proud of the achievements at Travelers Rest High School during the 2018-2019 school year. With outstanding support from the community, PTSA, and SIC, we work together to provide an outstanding educational experience for the TRHS student body that prepares each student for college and career readiness.
Targeted efforts to provide an academically challenging curriculum continues to be a valuable opportunity afforded to our students. Providing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programs (A district and state leading 96% passage rate on IB exams in 2018), nine Advanced Placement classes, and the continuation of dual credit courses in conjunction with Greenville Tech sets our students on a path of academic preparedness for college. These three rigorous programs enable our students to leave our school well on their way to a college degree and we are proud that Travelers Rest High is one of a select few high schools in Greenville County to offer three college level programs for our students on our campus. As a result of these and other efforts to bolster academic success for our students, we were above the state average for SAT, WIN Workplace Readiness Testing, and EOC scores. Our seniors continued the tradition of academic excellence with scholarship offers exceeding $8.7 million and we had 15 Palmetto Fellow Scholarship winners. Just as important as academic rigor are our efforts to support those who are in need of alternative routes to college and career readiness. We continue with great success to provide non-traditional learning opportunities resulting in an increase in the number of students graduating. These efforts include our highly successful Power Hour program, free credit and content recovery opportunities, the Satellite Diploma Program, incentives for students to attend Life Long Learning, and virtual classes. Additionally, we offer on campus Career and Technical Education opportunities in business, law enforcement, agriculture, and family and consumer sciences to assist our students in career readiness.
As always, extracurricular activities continued to enhance the school experience. We had all state athletes in all three sports seasons, 95% of our varsity teams participated in the state playoffs. Additionally, our wrestling team produced two individual state champions and advanced to the third round of the team playoffs for the first time in school history. The ladies Cross Country team won its first ever region championship. And of course we are overwhelming proud of our ladies Track and Field team, with two individual state champions and the team state championship. The fine arts program continues to win awards, with our band receiving the Overall Performance Award for the ninth consecutive time and the concert festival band received that highest possible ratings in competition. The student body demonstrated character and commitment to the community by raising nearly $50,000 for local charities. Student Council was named a South Carolina Gold Level Honor Council for the fifteenth consecutive year and was awarded a National Gold Level Honor Council award for the eleventh consecutive year. All of our activities and sports prepare students for leadership and cooperative roles that are necessary in college and career readiness.
As educators, parents, and community members, we feel the students of TRHS are provided superior college and career readiness opportunities. Our faculty and staff, in partnership with our community, are committed to achieving this goal.
Mr. Lou Lavely, Principal
