Cherryvale Elementary School is a newly formed consolidated school. Merging with F. J. DeLaine during the 2018-2019 school year, Cherryvale continues with three main initiatives. These initiatives include Leader In Me processes, continuation as an Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) site--as recognized by the South Carolina Arts Commission, and implementation of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) program through the use of Project Lead The Way (PLTW)!
With an emphasis on the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, Cherryvale’s counselor spearheads individual, small group, and class sessions in order to help students with their academic and socio-emotional needs. In addition, students have opportunities to participate in weekly coding classes, master various technology programs, and develop their artistic skills. Students receive personal and class recognitions through the National Elementary Honors Society, quarterly and yearly awards recognitions, the Terrific Kids Program, and Leader In Me. Many students participate in school-level academic and creative activities to include—various school choirs, the dance club, drama club, the environmental club, the Safety Patrol, STEP Team, and the SOAR After-School Tutoring Program.
One of the main priorities of Cherryvale is to ensure students learn in a safe environment. District office staff, school staff members, and local law enforcement agencies work together closely to create and maintain a safe school.
Teachers and staff participate in on-going professional development training in order to remain current with effective strategies in education. Staff members incorporate learning goals and create an exciting, hands-on, collaborative learning environment for students.
Cherryvale is a proud recipient of the ABC grant for approximately $33,000.00. Our students will benefit from this program throughout the three years for which it is funded. Our school also is a recipient of the USDA Healthier US Schools Gold Level award for its leadership role in implementing a healthier school nutrition environment.
Our professional expertise is recognized in school-based recognitions such as the 2019 Air Force Swamp Fox Teacher of the Year (Bridgett Henderson), 2019 Induction Teacher of the Year (Akeila Robertson), and 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year (Renee Terrell). District level recognitions include the 2019 Sumter School District Induction Teacher of the Year (Akeila Robertson) and the STAR Teacher of the Month (Bridgette Henderson).
Finally, Cherryvale Elementary School administrators, teachers, staff and students thank community stakeholders for their support. We appreciate the support and generosity of Christ Community Church, Harvest Hope, Hillcrest Alumni Association, Morris College, New Salem Baptist Church, Shaw Air Force Base, St. Luke AME Church, Sumter Aquatics Center, The Olive Tree Bookstore, United Ministries, and Wayman Chapel AME Church.
