Frances Mack Intermediate School (FMIS) is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by personalizing learning strategies of student agency, deeper learning and flexible learning pathways. Students have opportunities to lead, learn and serve their community engaging others in (4C’s) communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.
FMIS utilizes the Montessori Method, problem-based learning and a multi-disciplined workshop model to create student-centered personalized learning experiences. Our recent experimentation with project- based learning (PBL) has increased opportunities for personalized learning and using one to one technology. Students at Frances Mack Intermediate School showcase their personalized learning strategies using the PBL model. Students develop driving questions for research, create work plans to achieve rigorous learning goals and communicate their deeper learning experiences through real world problem solving. Learning exhibitions at FMIS showcase student work and provide evidence of deeper learning. Students present and display learning to an authentic audience comprised of peers, teachers, board members, field experts and parents.
Frances Mack Intermediate School also has many organizations, clubs and partnerships that allow students to utilize their world class skills and knowledge by leading, learning and serving. FMIS Jr. Beta club, Gifted and Talented programs, Band, Chorus, Run-Hard and Robotic teams engage and empower our Lexington Four learning community. These clubs and organization’s commitment to serve the community help support local service projects, agencies and care facilities demonstrating the world class skills of college and career readiness guided by the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. FMIS students received recognition for their leadership, learning and service in 2018-2019. National and State awards in literacy, art, creativity, dance, Special Olympics and collaboration/communication were presented to our talented FMIS students. Mentor programs (City Year), parent partnership (PALS), South Carolina Department of Innovation and post-secondary partnerships, that include the University of South Carolina (AWAKE) and Midlands Technical College (TRIO), have allowed Frances Mack Intermediate School to be recognized as a school of distinction while striving to become a school that personalizes learning opportunities for all students.
