In August 2017 St. James Intermediate opened its doors to our first 5th and 6th grade students from the St. James attendance area of Horry County, South Carolina. Over the past two years staff have focused on developing our students 21st century skills by utilizing our flexible learning spaces, and furniture. SJIS is a state of the art building design that provides a visibly open school setting, which allows teachers to take learning beyond the walls, and outside their classrooms. The school is outfitted with flexible furniture which can be easily moved for various learning structures. Interior classroom walls allow for viewing of students inside and outside of classrooms. The learning commons (media center) is the center, and focal point of our school. Through the use of our flexible space, and furniture we work to provide all students with world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by ensuring their successes in multiple ways.
The past two years have been an amazing journey as we are now settled into our transformational facility. Staff have collaborated throughout the year in order to provide meaningful learning experiences for our students around a rigorous curriculum. Lesson activities incorporate student engagement around the four c’s of (creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking). Our yearly fifth grade math fair is a great example of how students engageS with each other and apply their critical thinking skills. It also provides a number of students the opportunity to develop communication, and collaborative skills through their creation of probability games. The games are showcased at the fair, and students and parents attend to explore and play their creative games. We look forward to continuing with establishing school traditions with our supportive school community. Our focus is to continue our journey in providing an amazing educational experience for our students that prepares them for their futures around a rigorous curriculum, and learning experiences that truly develop their 21st century skills.
