South Conway Elementary School is continuing to help all students develop the world Class Skills of the profile of a South Carolina Graduate by providing a caring, safe and academically challenging learning environment. We provide an environment through the implementation of our school’s vision: a school that develops the emotional, social and intellectual development of each child and provides Service Learning opportunities for students to solve real world problems through becoming active, responsible citizens. South Conway Elementary School had an excellent 2018-2019 school year. Each grade level participated in Service Learning projects which helped to address needs in the community. Service Learning projects included working with senior citizens, Solid Waste Authority, Emergency Preparedness, Churches Assisting People (CAP), Fostering Hope, First Responders, Veterans, Freedom Readers and Animal Shelters. Students and teachers also participated in projects such as the American Cancer Society’s Red Nose Initiative, Red Cross Blood Drives, Relay for Life and the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart. Reading, Math and Citizenship Incentives along with recognition programs were continued to encourage students to do their personal best in all academic and character areas. Students were recognized as good school citizens, life skill leaders as well as offered opportunities for leadership. Early intervention continues to be the focus in our school. Interventions through an RTI model were provided for students in both reading and math based upon their academic needs. Tutoring was provided for all students in grades K-5 in reading, writing and mathematics during the year. Our kindergarten had 97% of their students to benchmark on DIBELS. All students grew academically throughout the year as indicated on the DIBELS and MAP assessments. Digital content programs were implemented such as Achieve 3000, Aleks Math and Lexia. Students in grades 3-5 grew 203 Lexiles during the course of the year. 71% of these students met or exceeded ending knowledge on their grade level on the Aleks math program. Our teachers have worked diligently to incorporate a blended learning model for their students. Our PTO sponsored successful fundraising activities to encourage parental involvement and provided extra funding for school projects such as fine arts day, Grandparents Day Breakfast, fifth grade honors day and teacher recognition programs. Our Title One budget supported 1 part time reading interventionist, a family school coordinator, 1 curriculum coach, 2 Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Service Counselors and parent workshops. Many local business partners provided incentives for our students and staff. In addition, several faith-based organizations partnered with our school to provide hurricane relief for our school community at the beginning of the year. Clubs are provided for students in the areas of music, Drama, Archery, Good News Club, Rubix Cube and Kid Zone, an after school childcare program. We continued to partner with Coastal Carolina University to sponsor mentors for students and to provide practicum and intern opportunities for future teachers. Our goal is to help all students reach their aspirations and to give them voice in their learning. We are fortunate to have the community support for our school. South Conway Elementary School is proud of the successes and the progress they are making.
