Skyland Elementary is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the profile of the South Carolina graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment.   This environment is further supported by a rigorous, yet child-centered curriculum, a focus on student data, teacher collaboration, teacher-centered professional development, and early reading and math intervention programs.

We further utilize a variety of teaching techniques and strategies to reach every child's unique learning style.  The Learning Focused Planning Model is incorporated across all grade levels and emphasizes the use of brain-based research and strategies such as advanced organizers, student collaboration and acceleration to increase student mastery.  Another unique feature of our curriculum is the integration of the arts through the IDEA program.  An arts integrated approach allows students to showcase their acquisition of knowledge and skills through non-traditional approaches and actively engages students in the learning.  In addition, we utilize a curriculum database to provide teachers with a plethora of well-developed units of study, prepared lessons, engaging activities, and numerous technology resources to further enhance all curricular areas. These are just to name a few of the most unique research-based best practices that we utilize at Skyland to increase student performance.

At Skyland, we also focus on the development of the whole child.  Therefore, we incorporate many other programs to support student success.  One such program is our character education program which teaches students to work well with others and to make decisions that support success.  Utilizing children's literature as a teaching tool students have open dialog with our guidance counselor about the character traits that build success, as well as how to respond when adversity  strikes.  In addition, we provide numerous opportunities for students to get involved in clubs and service organizations that extend beyond the school day, increasing leadership, building citizenship, and strengthening talent among our students.

As a result of our unwavering focus on putting students' needs first, our students continue to earn and maintain the highest levels of performance statewide.  However, we acknowledge that all of our efforts would be meaningless without an outstanding team of dedicated teachers, staff, business partners and volunteers who all continue to give selflessly to ensure that every child at Skyland succeeds.
