Luther Vaughan Elementary School (LVES) is helping all students develop world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, orderly environment that promotes learning, providing students with the necessary materials and instruction they need to succeed, and ensuring the success of these students by providing highly qualified and knowledgeable staff. Our mission, in partnership with family and community, is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to become responsible, productive citizens in 21st century society by providing a variety of learning experiences that address the diverse needs of every student. It is our desire to provide each student with numerous opportunities to interact with colleges throughout their career at LVES. Students participated in several college student days and were able to tour campuses and watch sporting events. Several colleges also allowed their students to visit LVES and speak with the students to provide inspiration and guidance.
Continued implementation of instructional delivery methods such as Next Steps to Guided Reading, small group instruction, whole group instruction, SAXON math, My Math, and STAR progress monitoring has helped raise academic rigor and success. With the district One to One Model, technology played an important role in the improvement of academics for LVES students. Teachers collaborated to craft units of study which included the use of technology for research and project based learning opportunities that increased engagement.
LVES serves a very diverse student population with many different needs. Our population includes a high percentage of African American and Hispanic students, as well as four self-contained special education classes. The support from our families and community is very important to our success. Families are welcome to visit classrooms, eat lunch with their child, attend programs that highlight student performances, and participate in various parenting seminars presented by the school’s home school coordinator. We appreciate the partnerships that we continue to cultivate with our families and community. These elements have played an important role in ensuring students from LVES are responsible and respectful students ready for the next step in their educational journey.
Our theme for 2018-2019 has been “IMPACT - Inspiring Minds while Promoting Achievement by Collaborating Together.” Through this theme, Luther Vaughan Elementary is evolving into a first class educational institution.
